Basketball more than any other team sport is a coaches sport

Flagged for trolling. No one could believe this.
It's absolutely true. Look at history. The NBA or college it's all about the coaches. Look at the Lakers and Celtics history or even the Rockets.
Football is so much more dependent on coaching than basketball that it's almost laughable to make the comparison.
You are right in the sense that game planning, play calls, schemes make more of an impact in football than in basketball.

The rub though is during the game the head football coach can be somewhat of a CEO type, with his delegated men running various aspects, calling plays, etc. The head coach also only has access to one official- so it's harder to "work the officials" if you so chose. That role would hypothetically suit BK VERY WELL.

Unfortunately, in basketball it doesn't work that way. Only the head coach is allowed to even stand up for an extended period of time during game play and he's the only one who can extensively complain to (all 3) officials during play. A good sideline coach has the ability to direct play, preemptively avoid turnovers, know during game play when timeouts should be called, best get makeup calls, know the best rotations to play given the circumstances, etc. All told, because of the speed of the game and sideline restrictions, it is hard to delegate this stuff. BK is a poor sideline coach as a result and puts us at a relatively disadvantage compared to other stronger coaches.

On second thought, why don't we just take Pumpy's article and act on it. Give Kennedy 20% of his salary? Only have him show up for every fifth game? Only let him pick one player on the court at a time?

The fewer players involved in a sport, the more dependent the game is on the players.

We've got too much talent and experience for anything less than a top 3 SEC finish and a couple of Ws in the NCAA tourney to not be considered highly disappointing. Even with a loser nice guy as our head coach. Basically what the guy above me said but no and/or on being highly competitive for SEC reg season & tourney AND Sweet 16 berth. Both.
This. Don't usually like to sound so harsh but it's time as a university to wake up and realize that we can compete for titles in every major sport. This mindset of mediocrity is disgusting and sad.

First, Seth Davis ain't no 'blogger' bro...he's Seth Davis!

Second, you often see people echo similar 'It is the Jimmies & Joes' comments regarding success hoops. Here is yet another Sports Illustrated article by Pete Thamel on the Georgetown coaching search just this week where he throws out the '80-20' opinion.

Modern college coaching is 80% player acquisition, navigating the complicated spaces of AAU programs, agents and middlemen.

Obviously, there are good arguments either way on this. But the 'Jimmies & Joes not the X's & O's' debate has been around since the dinosaurs.

Technically back then it was actually "it's the raptors and rexes not O's and X's."

TexAgs sure does obsess on that 20% part of the pie. What a time waster.

20% is enough to take someone from an A to a C in school, which actually does sound like a good description of the Billy Kennedy era.

Talent acquisition is the most important factor but it isn't enough to guarantee a great team. It might not even guarantee a good team. And while there is a correlation between being "good" and winning games, a certain amount of randomness can swing any individual game.

On paper A&M has great talent in 2017. I believe the coaching will be poor based on Kennedy's track record. They should still be a good team that makes the NCAA tournament. Randomness will ultimately be the biggest factor in a tournament run (which is true for most teams).

If we play up to our talent "on paper" during the regular season then I would absolutely reconsider Billy Kennedy's coaching acumen. But nothing in Billy Kennedy's two decades of sub-mediocrity suggest that I will have to do so.

Oh I was agreeing with you. I really can't wait to see what Melvin can do with Antoine Wright and a freshman Joe Jones next year.

I bet LSU fans can practically taste the Final Four they're guaranteed just by having Ben Simmons and Tim Quarterman together.

You are not agreeing with me. I am a nobody and did not write that article. You are agreeing with Seth Davis!
