It's official. Malik Newman is transferring per Jon Rothstein.
I was told he was transferring since before the SEC tourney to Kansas. Sitting out a year does not seem smart.

Let's see how long it takes Goodman to add my comment to twitter or ESPN :-)

The "word on the street" if you will is that he always considered himself a one-and-done so he didn't even bother going to class. So if that's the case he's going to have to end up at a JUCO or overseas somewhere for a year.

Per ESPN, it appears that Newman wasn't happy with his development under Howland. The article doesn't mention grades, though if he was expecting to be a one and done, that could be an additional factor. I guess his transfer destination will speak to if there was also a grades issue.

Newman averaged 11.3 points per game this past season for the Bulldogs, but a source close to the situation told ESPN that he was "unhappy with his role and how he was utilized." Newman was fourth on the team in field goal attempts last season.

Webster said that Newman does not yet have a future destination, but he told ESPN that his son will likely narrow down his list in the next week.

Malik Newman currently on NC State campus, source told ESPN. Mississippi state transfer visited Western Kentucky last week.

Saw him playing yesterday at the nba combine.

It showed up as a live event...I'm guessing it's tough to transfer without going to class sometime

Yes, it was a live event back in May when the combine took place.

Thanks

Saw it flupp Ng channels and thought it was done which is why I hit the info on it. Don't give a rip about those things so don't follow it but wanted a little basketball fix.
In my defense, if it's not live at the moment it doesn't say it is...

I'm hearing that Malik Newman will most likely choose Kansas this week. The interest level from Self has not been to Malik's dad's liking, but Addidas is still involved in the recruitment and their investment in the Newman family.

Rothstein: Mississippi State transfer Malik Newman is down to Kansas and Western Kentucky, sources told @CBSSports. Decision expected in next few days.

Looking at the schools he's considering, I guess this means he's in good enough shape academically. He must have really felt uncomfortable playing under Howland to sacrifice a year of playing time and potentially delay any pro career.

Malik is still probably better than anything WKU has at this point in time. It would be awesome to see Stansbury return that program to national prominence.

Stansbury now 0-2 trying to land Newman. Time to put that connection to bed.

He should have gone to WKU. He wants to be the feature scorer and he's going to have a lot tougher competition at KU.

That might have been his mindset choosing Miss St. a year ago. It didn't work out for him there, though.

I am not sure he will even get playing time at KU, let along be the featured scorer.

He went to his local school Miss State where his dad went and if he had gone to WKU that would have been to be coached by a former Miss State coach who was also an old coach of his dad. Maybe him going someplace that breaks away from a Mississippi connections theme plus a place where he is 'just another player' will be a good thing for him.
