I know this isn't A&M basketball or even college basketball....but the GOAT shooter Steph Curry scored 51 points last night vs. Orlando on 20 of 27 shooting, making 10 3-pointers. That was after scoring 42 points in a win @Miama just the night before.

quote:
After the game, Warriors coach Steve Kerr expressed his current state of disbelief, saying, "A 3-point shot is like a layup. A half-court shot is like a 3-point shot. Steph just, that's what he does."

As a big basketball fan, I never thought I'd see a guy who could displace Jordan as my GOAT, and Curry still has work to do to get me to that point (though I have been sold for quite some time that he is the GOAT 3-point shooter), but this guy...this guy....

Curry this season:

- Has made 46.1% of his 3-point shot attempts. On average attempting 11 3-pointers per game and making 5 of them.
- Has made 4 of 11 shots from beyond 39 feet (36%).
- Has made 35 of 52 shots from beyond 28 feet (67.3%). The NBA 3-point line distance is 22 feet to 23 feet 9".
- Has now made a 3-pointer in 149 consecutive games, including playoff games (NBA record).

Most 3-pointers made in a single season (NBA):

#1 - Stephen Curry - 286 - 2014-2015
#2 - Stephen Curry - 276 - 2015-2016 (at his current pace he'll break his own record in about 2 more games)
#3 - Stephen Curry - 272 - 2012-2013
#4 - Ray Allen - 269 - 2005-2006 (Remember those days when Ray Allen was a standard for what a great shooter looked like?)

Those are staggering numbers. Almost makes me want to watch an NBA game. Almost.

Jeeeebus, that's insane efficiency. Now the GOAT v. Jordan comment in OP was qualified, and while I'm a big Curry fan, he doesn't do enough on the defense end to compare with MJ (though he is very intuitive and opportunistic). I do think he's the most skilled offensive player ever (at least in my 30-40 years of reference) and greatest shooter (not even a doubt in my mind). He might do more with his talent than anyone I've seen.

He's been good for 1.5 years with one ring (that he didn't even get finals MVP for) and you're already comparing him to Jordan? Cmon now

He's been good a lot longer than that. He's been otherworldly for a season and a half.

Pumpkin he's not good enough on defense to contend for the GOAT title but he could end up as the best offensive player of all time. I've been watching basketball a long time and I've never seen anyone do what Curry is doing. His range and ability to get shots off is unprecedented.

First player in NBA history to make 10 threes and 10 twos in the same game. Just crazy.

Curry is putting up video game stats this season. The guy is averaging almost a point per minute on the floor. He's sat out something like 16 4th quarters and still leads the league in scoring.

The Warriors are a really fun team to watch.

Think this was also the first time a player scored 50 points with 1 (or less) FT attempts

when he averages 30 a game then we can talk about the greatest scorer of all time. Until then that is Jordan's to lose. Jordan is the only player in the history of the game to average 30 ppg in his career.

Curry will never sniff Jordan's jock as a complete basketball player, but IMO he is already the greatest shooter of all time.

Ok I lied. Wilt Chamberlain is the only other person to average 30 points for his career. Hell, Steph hasn't even done that for a season. He is averaging 30.4 ppg right now with 25 games left. Jordan averaged 30.1 points everytime he stepped on the court.

Curry is averaging 30.4 ppg in 33.8 minutes per game. He has sat out the entire 4th quarter of I think at least 15 games because the Warriors have often blown opponents out.

Michael Jordan averaged 30.1 ppg in 38.3 minutes per game over his career.

IMO Jordan is GOAT overall, while Curry deserves GOAT 3-point shooter status at this point in time. Though if Curry continues doing what he is doing for a few more seasons racking up NBA championships and MVPs in the process, then I am sure he will more and more start being put in the same conversation as Jordan.

He's averaging 30 a game right now at a higher efficiency. Another wild stat: Jordan made 580 3 pointers in his career. Curry is going to make that many in 2 seasons (this season + last).

And, you gotta wonder what Jordan's 3 pt stats would look like if he wasn't so damn good at driving to the basket.

Curry's good. Curry's fun to watch. Curry's not contending for best ever right now. He's definitely not in the top 10 right now and probably not even the top 20

I don't think anyone can pass MJ in the public mind. He was a fantastic ball player who also had the fortunate circumstance of being the lead guy on his team but a wide margin (Pippin was very good, but he didn't create a Shaq/Kobe or a Kareem/Magic situation). So every time the Bulls won the title, Jordan was the alpha dog who took home the Finals MVP and all that.

Then throw in that 1) the NBA was enjoying a bit of a marketing Renaissance at the time, 2) the Bulls were the best team and in a large market, 3) endorsements were bigger than ever (and MJ got all the best ones including the Air Jordan holy grail), and you get an honest to God legend that's only become larger than life in the time since his retirement. I mean how do we know he's the best? How do we know he's better than the all-time scoring leader Kareem who also won 6 titles, a couple Finals MVP awards, and 6 regular season MVP awards? Than Magic who won 3 Finals MVP awards and nearly AVERAGED a triple double several seasons? Than Wilt who averaged 50/25 one year?

They played different positions in different eras so these guys are all almost impossible to compare.

I agree you can't put Curry in top-10 all-time right now because he hasn't been doing it long enough yet.

But Curry is much better than 'good' Tango. He is a GREAT player and will easily win his second consecutive NBA MVP this season.

Easily? He's a great scorer, but he's not the most valuable. Kahwi Leonard is more important to his team - and a more well rounded basketball player

Give every gm in the league the option of choosing one of them and it's near unanimous for curry.

He was a 32% career 3 pt shooter. Average at best 3 pt shooter.

Jordan is the GOAT, but Curry is a far and away better shooter and it's not even close.

51 pts on 27 shots is ridiculous.

Curry is already a top ten NBA all timer.
