Being out of state I am a little slow on getting the news. Do we now have female cheerleaders at A&M in addition to Yell Leaders?

We now have a dance team. They are infinitely better for the basketball environment than the yell leaders are. YELL LEADERS NEED TO GO!

I think you are referring to the A&M Dance Team. They are not cheerleaders.

They are the dance team and as far as I am concerned they are good bull. Football traditions are football traditions. Basketball is a different venue and based upon what I saw when watching the tt game I think A&M is getting closer to developing a new basketball atmosphere.

One question though. Do we still read the battalion duing the opposing team inroduction then wad up the paper and throw it on the court?

The dance team is definitely good bull. We have quite a few hotties out there. A while back, I read that our dancers were actually ranked in the National Collegiate Dance Team rankings. I looked for a link, but I can't find it.

Pooh Ah, to answer your question, I think that tradition died when we moved out of Jollie Rollie.

Ah, so they are like the dance teams that pro basketball teams have, who go out on the floor during breaks to do a vigorous dance routine of some kind? Was this controversial to the old guard?

Forget the dance team, let's get some cheerleaders. I'm tired of explaining why we don't have cheerleaders to people. I may need someone to explain it to me.

They have been performing for at least 3-4 yrs now.

Sorry the yell leaders get on my nerves.

If you don't know how to do a yell on your own I think you must have problems.

Quite a few hotties? I counted only 2. Pretty sad if you ask me.

First of all, I am not trying to piss anyone off by saying this, and I am all for tradition. I love A&M, and there are so many traditions that I have come to love and value. But I for one would love to see cheerleaders on our sidelines. And they are surely more appropiate for a basketball game. Maybe it is just the male in me coming out, but I would much rather see some attractive women on the sidelines than just a bunch of guys. I wouldn't even mind keeping the yell leaders and just adding the girls. Then we could still do the yells and keep the tradition alive. JMO.

We should get them because everyone else has them, including every HS in America? It's kind of pathetic to think that we should get cheerleaders, and throw aside 90 years of tradition, simply because you're lazy.

I'm rather indifferent to the dance team, I will say that the times they went out Saturday were awful because fans get quiet and watch their drill. That's just bad luck I know, and I realize that the dance team timeouts are pre-selected, but they killed some awfully electric moments. There were many times when the right option would have been for the Band to strike up the Noble Men of Kyle or some other loud, bousterous, Aggies only song and get the crowd clapping along. Something to keep the energy level up. As it is, I have gone to the side that doesn't particularly like the yells as they also force quiet into an otherwise loud group of fans, but cheerleaders aren't going to do a damn thing for noise levels, in fact they'll do less than the Yell Boys. At least the yells are loud when we do finally yell, nobody follows cheerleaders, they are completely ineffective.

Bottom line is that I have a hard time believing that the school that created Kyle Field and Olsen Field, two of the best atmospheres in there respective sports, can't development a signature for Reed. But it takes time, Kyle and Olsen didn't get to be what they are overnight.

Liberalism is an unfortunate by-product of Capitalism.

They used to be 90% hotties. Numbers have dipped considerably the past few years. Still the wrong forum though.

They are relatively hot girls in skimpy outfits, wiggling around for our entertainment...and I LIKE it. What is wrong with you people?

I'm with you aggierogue. I mean tradition is one thing, but there's also something to be said about continous improvement and evolving with the times. Having a handful of hairy dudes out there decked out in white might have been cool when A&M was all male, but I for one prefer having some hotties out there. I too am sick of having to make **** up as to why we don't have any friggin' chicks out there.

Funny how times change. When I graduated in 1980 (seems like yesterday) the very thought of women cheerleaders would have been seen as blasphemy. Just an observation, not a position.
Also, regarding the flak I am getting for starting this post, it was based on what I spotted during the clip of Antoine Wright's dunk, on this very same board. Seemed like a logical place to ask a question about it. Chill.

corner,

when I graduated in 2000, I lived in Austin for about a year and a half. I now live in San Marcos. But you're right. Three things I always had to answer. Were you in the corp, what's your obsession w/us in your fight song and what's up with those dudes on the sidelines w/the white uniforms? You can't even try to argue that third question. What are you gonna say, "Guys, you got it all wrong, male yell leaders are cool". Not me bro. I'm not ashamed to say that I would rather be looking at some ladies. And as a football fan, it really gets on my nerves when our O is on the field and they start leading yells. And it happens pretty often. They need learn when it is time to yell, and when it's not. Some may call me a 2% for these views, but I can guarantee you that I love my school and I love my aggie football.

The girls are not new. They were at G. Rollie White so its practically a tradition. I'd say they've been around almost 10 years now...this is more a reflection of how no one pays attention to the hoops team if people are just now noticing we have a dance team at the basketball games. BTW, Yell Leaders for football is great, yell leaders for basketball is an example of the law of diminishing returns.

Traditions, you people will let them die a little each year because you like to brag about them, but you don't support them. Can't have it both ways.

bufrilla,

you have a point. it seems selfish of me to complain about things that I don't like, when these things have been going on for a while. Still, there are only two traditions that I am not real fond of, and not having cheerleaders is one of them. but like i said, I would be all for having both.

Holy crap!!! The idea of cheerleaders at A&M IS blasphemy to me. How can anyone who calls themselves an Aggie say they want cheerleaders? I will never, I repeat NEVER, support the idea of cheerleaders at Texas A&M University. It's called tradition, people. We are unique, let's STAY unique. If you want to see attractive girls in skimpy outfits, go to Northgate. Go to the Rec. Shoot, go to class. A&M is full of beautiful women. We don't need them on the sidelines of our football games. For the record, I don't have a problem with the dance team. They're not cheerleaders.

What's with people now and killing traditions?? I'm sick of hearing people say that certain things need to change. I think that just having a dance team is fine and we don't really need cheerleaders for basketball. Too many people are allowing too many traditions to die on this campus now. If anyone wants A&M to be like every other school, I say move to t.u. and become a sip!!! I came to A&M because it wasn't like every other school. Let the tradition and Aggie spirit live on.

I will never support cheerleaders at A&M. You guys who can't answer questions about why we have yell leaders are just pathetic wimps. I have never been embarrassed to answer that question. You sound like people who want to join the giant herd everyone else is in. I have no problem with a dance team at basketball. I cannot fathom/imagine cheerleaders doing Farmers Fight. Cheerleaders leading Beat the Hell outta... you gotta be kidding. Cheerleaders carrying yell leaders after a game - No ****** way. A female yell leader is perfectly OK - I hope we get one soon.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
Uh. Would this "perfectly OK" female yell leader have - like - hair? and, like - look like a girl?
SpicewoodAg
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Of course - a nice head of hair - a slim athletic body and a more closely fitting version of yell leader clothing!

But not a damn cheerleader!

The reasons given for having cheerleaders at our football games are very lame.

1. So I don't have to explain it.

2. To have some chicks to look at.

Neither reason has anything to do with helping to support our team, which is what we are there for right?

The A&M crowd is more focused on the game than at any other place, IMO. Having yell leaders helps keep us in step and organized. They are a BIG reason why our football environment is so awesome.

Having cheerleaders randomly tumbling and jumping around and showing their legs does NOT help get the fans into the game. They are distracting if anything and would greatly deter from the kind of focused enthusiasm that makes Kyle Field what it is.

I guess Watty likes to look at hairy dudes. That sucks. They can still be called yell leaders, just make them be hot chicks with short skirts. We have some of the prettiest girls in the country, but all the rest of the country sees is a handfull of dudds making hand gestures. While the other sidelines are rocking and packed with pretty girls. I JUST DON'T get it. The funny thing about tradition is that some become the backbone of the university, and some become an anchor tied to your leg. Guess what I think this one is.
aggierogue
How long do you want to ignore this user?
spicewood,
yeah right, you are so not a conformist. dance team, cheerleader. In the end, whats the difference? If you are so true to tradition, then you wouldn't want a female yell leader. Hell, you wouldn't have ever wanted women at A&M. Give me a break. Let's never question anything anymore, right? whatever. in the end it's just a difference of opinion. And at the A&M I went to, we were entitled to have that.

hot chicks in short skirts doing yells. I don't know about that. That might take my attention away from the game.

>>Three things I always had to answer.<<

So you want cheerleaders because you want to be like everyone else? Or is it that you have a problem answering questions? Based upon your posts here, it seems it is one or the other.

>>Were you in the corp, what's your obsession w/us in your fight song and what's up with those dudes on the sidelines w/the white uniforms?<<

I wish the multitude of questions I am asked daily were this easy. 1. No, but I wish I had been; 2. No obsession, no more than Texas Bite, er, ah, Fight (e.g. "Texas Fight, Texas Fight, And it's goodbye to A&M"; and finally, 3. they are called yell leaders and they are one reason most teams hate playing at Kyle Field, and they are just as useful today as they were when they originated.

I'm a little dissapointed there is an Aggie, any Aggie, that really cares what other people that aren't Aggies think about our school.

I don't think its that aggierogue cares about what people say as much as how much sense they make in their probing as to why we have DUDES in white. WHY ONLY GUYS? WHY NOT HALF GUYS HALF GIRLS? Sure girls can yell at the games but aren't allowed to lead them? Sounds pretty sexist and silly. But then again this will sound sexist and silly...Chicks in skirts are ALOT easier on the eyes than dudes in white barber suits...
