sorry to disappoint ya. my post of the "three questions" was to address an argument. My opinion was established long before I was debating with t-sips. corner could not have said it better in his last post about traditions. I don't necessarily have a problem with yell leaders, nor do I think they are the reason that we are such a formidable opponent at home. I would just like to have the girls too, or a mixture of both. You guys can't rant all you want about how terrible of aggies we are b/c we don't agree with you. But I won't lose any sleep over it.

I guess people that want cheerleaders just didn't come to A&M for the same reasons I did, and that makes me sad. I wish all 45,000 of us had come for the tradition, the uniqueness and the family atmosphere, but things are changing. And not for the better. There are hundreds of colleges where one could go to learn about business or journalism or agriculture or whatever, but onle ONE, TEXAS A&M, where there is such tradition and value, and too many people are too eager to "evolve" and throw it all away just so we can be mentioned in the same breath as a bunch of snooty liberal schools that A&M used to be a nice diversion from.

This is comical. If you have a huge desire to see girls on the sidelines of Aggie games then look at the opposing teams cheerleaders. Most of the time my friends are all making jokes about the ugly ones. If you are really desperate to oogle over females in tights check out most of the baton twirlers, egads!!

Look man, I love the traditions too. It's not something that I need to debate and get a bunch of people upset about. I love silver taps, muster, aggie rings, howdy, whoop, gig'em, scoring when we score, midnight yell (yes there are yell leaders), bonfire, trains at baseball games, ring dunking, fish camp, busses with traditional names on them, not walking on the grass at the MSC, ring dance, etc..... the list could go on and on. You guys act like we hate tradition if we are in favor of cheerleaders.
Just b/c I don't agree w/all of you on everything doesn't make me less of an aggie. You guys need to be a little less judgmental. In defense, I didn't start the name bashing. I merely joined in. Once again, I don't have to agree with you and you don't have to agree with me. My point is that just b/c someone started something up and called it a tradition doesn't mean that it is always best for our university. Speaking as an aggie, sorry to offend any of you. My apologies. I hope you will accept them.

Those who see the yell leaders as just some "hairy dudes" are way off base and are being very shallow minded about their value to our spirit. They are very much part of the foundation of many of our traditions.

These guys are formally elected to be yell leaders. In general, they are motivated and outstanding individuals, and are very qualified to represent our University. They are a much better choice than just "some hot chicks" who are snooty and spoiled rotten and whose whims will change like the wind.

Do you think your hot babes will tolerate being tackled and hauled off for a dunk in the water (oh my hair!) ? Can they handle commanding midnight yell? How many pushups can they do? Can they unite the Corp, Alumni, and current students into one resounding booming voice?

Without the yell leaders, one by one our football traditions would fall by the wayside, and Kyle Field would become just another glorified high school.

Now, if a female went through the proper procedure for becoming a yell leader, that is a different story. Unfortunately, I don't think your hot chicks would be up to the task.

In true Aggie fashion, I'm going to suggest that things be left exactly as they are. So they slipped some dancin' girls on the round ball court in the last few years - big deal.

I will never, however, support anything other than Fightin' Texas Aggie Yell Leaders at Kyle. I actually agree with one of aggierogue's initial points that the yells are already too frequent and often at inappropriate times. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I can't believe my eyes. Are these really Aggies spouting this crap! During and since my years in Aggieland I have traveled to many college sporting events, and I can truly say there is a thin line that separates most D1 schools from high schools in the silly cheers, backflips for every point, flip over signs, etc. etc. etc. that are used. Oh yea, don't forget apathetic pitiful crowds that don't understand the impact a coordinated crowd can have on the outcome of a game. I **** you not, the traditions in Aggieland (including yell leaders) are truly what makes us unique. I love getting questions about our traditions so I can say that "it is understandable someone from a school without their own unique traditions wouldn't understand traditions that have been around for nearly a century".

For the record, I don't have a problem with the dance team at basketball games (they actually started back around 1990), but they should not come at the expense of a thunderous crowd. I also don't have a problem with a non-reg or female yell leader if they are motivated, serious, and can do push-ups.

As an example, I had lunch with a former t.u. basketball player a few weeks ago. He mentioned that SWC teams hated coming into G.Rollie back in the 70's because the Aggies were so loud from the moment they walked in that they couldn't think straight. That's the kind of tradition we need to bring back to Reed (not new cheerleaders), and yell leaders are a key part of getting the crowd that loud! If the majority of the Ags out there don't agree, I can only draw one conclusion....Old Army's Dead!

How many more traditions that have been around for decades will you current students manage to kill off or ruin? It has been less than 13 years since I graduated and almost every significant tradition has been banned or "in the crosshairs", except for Silver Taps.

Texas A&M University is bigger than any of your selfish desires to see something different. Like you there were some things we thought could use tweaking when I first started there, but in retrospect I thank God that my "generation" of Aggies did not do anything to change it and it remained the same throuout our stay and for several years after.

If you want eye candy - maybe we just create a new positition at Kyle called Kyle Candy so you have something to look at besides football. We can elect the best looking Aggie babes and they can be strategically placed around Kyle. Pathetic, man.

The only thing a national audience cares about is whether or not our team is kicking the other team's **s. Only Kyle had a RWB-out. Only A&M has yell leaders and no cheerleaders. There is a definite connection.

It isn't terrible that you disagree with me. I respect your opinion and your right to it (I did respond, didn't I?). But you have to admit that my take on your view was certainly reasonable, since you framed it as though it was 1) a problem for you to answer the 3 questions you posed and/or 2) you were embarrassed, ashamed, or felt silly about the answer. If you don't care about what other people think, then why did you even bring up your encounters and the questions you were asked? In other words, I didn't say I was disappointed that you held the views you did; I said I was dissapointed you cared about what non-Aggies thought about A&M.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but other than your statements about Austin and SM, the only other reason I can find for you wanting cheerleaders is because of their attractiveness. I find that a little strange, since their looks doesn't do much for our competitiveness, and isn't that the point of "cheer" "leaders"?

I've always found cheerleaders useless, until my senior year in HS. We had elected 3 guys (who didn't add to the beauty of things) who forced them to get rid of the pom pom dance BS and actually start leading cheers. Nowadays, college cheerleading is simply one big popular culture gymnastics competition. That's great for those who participate, and I do watch the cheerleading competition on ESPN sometimes, but how exactly does doing stunts and dance routines help the football team?

I'm troubled by several messages on this forum, but this statement troubles me the most. Even if Texas A&M ceased to exist, I would NEVER become a sip.

Why can't you guys just ignore the yell leaders if you hate them so much, yell as loud as you can during the game, start your own 'chants' and then after the game, GO TO THE DIRTY SOCK like everybody else!

I'm always amazed at the number of people who are "embarrassed" by the men in white and explaining them. Sounds like you all may have some latent tendencies you are dealing with. They are just the ones who coordinate one of our coolest traditions- our yells. Stop looking at them in a sexual way guys, and you may feel better about the situation!

p.s. I have a little baby girl- and she is a hottie! Hoping she'll grow up to be Yell Leader!!
