The scoop on our team is that we’ve got a 6’11” post guy, who, IF he shows up, can be really good. Then, if you try to double him, it opens up some deadly three-point shooters, one of whom is very reliable (Lee Cummard, MWC co-player of the year) and one who is streaky, but when he’s hot, he’s super hot with a super-quick release from 3-range (Jonathan Tavernari). So, it’ll depend on who decides to show up and who’s hot, on our side. I’ll be reading up on A&M, and maybe even thinking about heading for Anaheim…

Sounds like Cummard is going to make the acquaintance of Mr Kirk and Mr Roland. Don't know anything about the MWC posts, but I'd bet that BYU's big guy isn't used to working against players like Jones and Davis.

edit...fixed.

Yeah, playing against Tyler Hansbrough is nothing like playing against Jones and Davis. Plaisted had one of his best games of the season when they played UNC, so I think the guy is legit and can hold his own against our bigs. I love how so many people think Jones and Davis are great defenders. Jones is a foul machine, and Davis will get you an occasional block.

The problem with Plaisted is he can't actually shoot. He "throws it in the vicinity of the basket". He can completely disappear for a game. And I mean completely. I don't know sometimes, it depends on the wind in the arena at the time?

Plaisted's biggest strength is that he runs like a horse.

I hope your team (A&M) has good transition D.

Jazzfanatic welcome to the board. Looking forward to facing you guys, should be a great game. The way the wind is blowing in the arena... this may explain quie a few of our woes as well, eh Ags?

I know from watching our team that transition D is a huge weakness. We either get in trouble and foul, or teams have an easy time running up and down the court. I really hope we can work on that this week. Plaisted will be a beast. Not to mention Cummard on the outside.

cubsin08, I was unaware that Hansbrough played on every Mountain West team. Playing one game against a VERY good big man =/= playing numerous games against decent to good big men.

I know, I was more pointing out that I don't think we have that much interior defense.

I get what you are trying to do, but Hansborough is a pretty poor defender. He only averages .3 blocks per game. In that game Plaisted had 24 points but it took him 20 shots. That is not very good for a big man. For example in the same game Psycho T had 21 points on 11 shots.

I know everyone is all about them playing UNC very close earlier this year, but we just played another #1 seed Kansas to a very close game and that was 2 days ago. I really do think this is going to be a good match-up and a great game.

That's a pretty poor measure of an interior defender. Tyler keeps his feet and stays out of foul trouble. He makes guys shoot over him. He doesn't surrender baseline very often. He keeps his man pushed off the block. Sure, he's not flashy, but he's not bad either. I'm sure Tyler's playing better now than he did early in the season, anyway.

jones is a great defender. he also has a problem getting into foul trouble when makes stupid decisions. that doesn't negate the fact that he plays great defense.

aggienate, that's a great point.

I think A&M wins this one comfortably, and then gives UCLA all they can handle.

Jones is terrible on defense and Davis is very close to being great. BD out-played Darrell Arther Saturday who is a McDonald's All-American. If BD plays under control, he is a very, very good player!

Jones is far from a good defender. If the KState coach had half a brain, he should have told Beasley or Walker to go at him every possession.

i have not seen byu play, but from what i am reading, jj will not be guarding the big man. if he really is good at running the floor, jj trying to keep up with him would be a disaster.

Plaisted is fast. that's one of his redeeming characteristics.

And this is based on your own expert opinion, because most of what I've read from opposing coaches and players have been rather complimentary of Joe.

With that said, I'd see a healthy DeAndre Jordan, who's fairly quick himself, guarding their big man most of the game. Elonu will sub in for him and his quicks are OK as well.

I like our chances of containing Plaisted in the halfcourt, but Grandpa Jones, God love him, doesn't gimp up the floor very quickly these days.

jones is a so strong that he is a good defender WHEN stays out of foul trouble.

If Plas is as fast as people are saying, look for Davis and Jordan to guard him. They are both fast for big guys, especially Jordan.

Joe Jones is a good defender in the post. When he gets in trouble is when he has to guard quick big men like Beasley.
