Here in Houston there's a Quizno's that's still going strong in the Town & Country area. It's near my office so I go there occasionally and I prefer it over Jersey Mike's or Jimmy Johns

Two that haven't been mentioned that I've recently enjoyed in Houston are Cheba Hut and Primo Hoagies. Both out of the way for me but a nice change of pace. Otherwise, I like Potbelly and Jimmy John's.

I mentioned Caprioti's earlier. I think it's them and Potbelly then throw the rest in a hat and pick.

Just discovered Primo's and it's is that indeed. Love the mild sharp Italian.

Was just thinking bout making this thread and lo and behold…

Of the national chains Jersey Mikes is a staple. Though Jimmy John's is super high up there for me because they do lettuce wraps. I also enjoy Subway far more than I will admit in person.

Though I was thinking more along the lines of homemade sandwiches. I'll never gain entry into the Blackstone or homemade pizza crowds but the idea of higher tier sandwiches at home has always intrigued me. For clarity I grew up a ham and cheese with mustard on the cheapest bread style and didn't discover "good" sandwiches till much later in life and have become obsessed with them. At least looking and researching them. What's y'all's go to for a damn good home made sandwich? What are some easy hacks you've discovered to elevate to another level?

DFW only but The Great Outdoors is fantastic.

Penn Station East Coast subs is awesome but the only local location I knew of closed in Plano. The Italian, heated, add banana peppers and extra mayo instead of oil and vinegar….religious experience.

I am with you on this. Potbelly is the best by quite a bit in my book. Then Jimmy Johns, which is really good and they have good hot peppers. Not a huge Jersey Mike's fan but their hot sandwich is good. I haven't eaten at Subway in over a dozen years, its disgusting. I miss Quiznos. Firehouse is not very good.
Another big fan of Potbelly. Damn good subs.

The first key is the bread, the second key is the toppings. Ideally, you'd make homemade bread, but most people don't have time for that. Buy yourself some good bread from the store, I favor French bread or Italian bread fresh from the baker. Your cold cut options are up to you. I like turkey or ham or turkey and ham, but am also okay with pepperoni or salami.

More important to me are the toppings, and by toppings I mean vegetables. Slice some tomatoes on there. Pickles if you have them. Cucumbers if you don't have pickles. Maybe some onion or bell pepper. Season with salt and pepper so the vegetables really pop. Toss some pickled banana peppers if you have them. Add a touch of spicey mustard to the top of the bread, slice your sandwich, and eat.

I can also recommend a hot Italian beef sandwich recipe, but it takes 72 hours to make because you're making your own beef broth, giardiniera, and bread.

Back in my student days, I ate more subs from that Subway at Northgate that I ever had in my life. (I'm sure a lot of y'all did as well.)

Glad I read this thread. Gonna go have myself a Gargantuan from JJ's now.

I love Hoody's. I do like Caprioti's too, buy not sure where those even are. I go to one sometimes when I'm out in El Paso. One that is less known or overlooked is Spec's. I know they don't all have a deli, but their sandwiches are solid.

As for the chains, we go to Jimmy John's a lot, but it's mostly bc it's close/convenient. I like the Philly from jersey Mike's. We also have an Ikes by us, which is decent. I avoid subway at pretty much all cost.

I can't explain it, but sandwiches and salads are two things that always seem to taste better when someone else makes them. I do agree with the poster above who commented on the bread - using a regular store bought white or wheat just isn't the same. But the veggies and meat never taste the same to me, either. Their tomatoes and lettuce always taste better than mine.

where are you buying your veggies? because they are buying the absolute cheapest **** known to man to make their sandwiches (referring to any of these franchise chains in this thread).
