Not sure if anyone has eaten here before in Waco. But it's some of the best Texas BBQ I've ever had. It's a husband and wife operation who are very devout in their faith. Phillip is a great friend and put his whole life and energy into making BBQ for his customers.

Their restaurant burned down a couple days ago after a fire in the kitchen spread to the whole building. I know this family will come back stronger than ever.

They stay true to their motto of:

"Salt Pepper And A Whole Lot Of Prayer"

I believe I read somewhere that it isn't their building and they're unsure if they'll get to get back into that location.

I thought it was a reasonable question, as I was thinking the same thing.

Agreed. Being "very devout in your faith" to solicit help on Go-Fund-Me isn't an acceptable substitute for buying an insurance policy. Personally, I would feel sacrilegious knowing that I skipped the ounce of prevention and now have to use my faith as a sales tactic to get others to provide a pound of cure.

"We have a long road ahead of us dealing with insurance, and everything is up in the air right now. We are unsure if we will ever return to this building that we do not own. Those are the facts of the situation."

Not sure if anyone actually read the GoFundMe blurb

Hey man. Personal friend so I took it personal. Just trying to help a buddy out. I'm over it now.

I can understand where some of y'all are coming from about the insurance. Hopefully they can figure it out.

We got a bourbon fundraiser going already that will help out as well.

even if they had insurance, the idea that would make them completely whole is hilarious.

I like how we just accept that fact. Pay all that money for insurance to not be fully covered and have to ask private citizens for help. God bless America.

I understand being strong in your faith, but attributing what happened to 'the enemy' seems off to me. It wasn't an attack from Lucifer, it was just a fire.

Don't understand the need for people to kick a family when their down. The insurance hopefully pays for the damages. But what about now? He needed the equipment and kitchen to generate income and all of a sudden it's gone.

So now he needs to grind to get by. The donations can assist with emergency purchases and supplies until he gets his restaurant fully operational again.

Lot of weird energy in this thread.

Yea, that came off as unhinged ranting in their Go Fund Me post. Really weird tone to the whole thing.

You (and they) are soliciting money by using religion as part of your sales strategy, you can't be surprised when people discuss that tactic, nor when others find it unsavory.

'Weird energy' is attributing an accident/employee error to 'the enemy' instead of acknowledging what it was, an accident/employee error. You go down that road and you won't like where you end up. Is every other BBQ establishment that manages to go without a fire simply more favored by God? Has your friend displeased Him? Should people avoid the establishment of someone God turned His back on?

It is perfectly acceptable to lean on your faith in private and with family/friends, it shouldn't be part of your marketing strategy to raise funds for your survival.

Look in the mirror. The 'odd one' is the person who thinks your friend's rantings are normal and sane.

No, he's not the odd one. Why be such a jerk? Who cares if they're using their faith to get them through a very hard time in their lives? A lot of people do that. It's how they justify not giving up. Keep the faith, don't give up, I'll learn something from this, etc. I don't understand the negativity toward them unless you just don't like the religion, and that's a different thread than the Food board!

I work with homeless Veterans and getting them housed. I provide psychotherapy, substance abuse treatment, case management and help them connect to community agencies.

I thought the OP was simple enough. Just trying to help a friend.

But isn't that what the insurance is for? You pay monthly premiums and anytime something bad happens the insurance comes and makes it better.

Just making sure I have this correct...its OK to discuss religion on the food board/this thread as long as you agree with it. If not, then it's not ok.

Everyone is allowed to live their life how they want. You don't have to be religious for me to help you, I care about you as a person. What ever makes you happy or gives you a sense of wellbeing, then I'm all for it.

Seems like a few people got upset that he used religion to ask for money. If you go through his life and journey, it's always been his faith. Of course he's going to turn to his beliefs during this extremely stressful time. That's pretty common.

And if you feel like he crossed the line or it didn't sit well with you, then that's okay and I respect your opinions.

Like I said, just trying to help out a friend.

The caption was copied and pasted to the go fund me. That was a post they made on social media the morning after the fire having absolutely nothing to do with the go fund me account.

Someone who is their friend started a gofundme for them because their business was destroyed and they don't know if they'll be able to get it back up and running because the building is NOT THEIRS. Owner of building may decide that he will take the insurance money that you folks keep talking about and build something else. I know nothing about this BBQ restaurant or the area it's located. Back to the religion stuff...the friend started a gofundme and then copy and pasted a post from the restaurants social media. The restaurant folks appear to have nothing to do with the gofundme or soliciting any money from anyone.

PS: This thread sucks.Sorry OP. This took a weird/odd turn.

My comment had nothing to do with your friend. It was simply pointing out the hypocrisy of a statement made.

It is a horrible thing your friend is going through, and I feel for him.

I'll bow out now bc any further discourse does not belong here.
