I too am a man of sophistication and culture.

I love these but it sucks they aren't $.99 any more

Thanks a lot, Sleepy Joe.

We drive through CS from Houston to Fort Worth a few times per year. I have 4 kids so even drive through can take a minute. My new hack is calling ahead to Wings N More 15 min out and picking it up. The kids (and me) love it and we keep moving.

LJS shrimp and crunchies used to be a once a year thing (all I could handle) but none close to me anymore.

My favorite meme for JitB tacos is always:

2 Tacos
1 Dollar

Torino's party pizza is up there. State Fair brand corn dogs as well. Another one is a bologna and mayo sandwich on white bread. For fast food, I still love Taco Bell soft tacos.

The hard part is so many of those "nostalgic" foods have evolved due to corporate ownership changes or health trends and no longer taste like they used to. Prime example on this thread is McDonald's nuggets. I'd probably buy a box from time to time if they still made them with dark meat. They just suck now and taste nothing like they used to. Same goes for a Big Mac although I make my own often enough to satisfy that craving.
So much truth in here. Not just that but the fries used to be fried in tallow. If you go to any restaurant that sells french fries or tots fried in tallow order them, they'll take you back in time. It's weird to say that I can remember eating fast food when it actually tasted good. I can remember growing up and being able to get great burgers at Sonic, DQ, and Wendy's in my hometown. Even Jack in the Box was good. That isn't the case anymore, they don't taste good anymore. Maybe that's a good thing that fast food tastes worse from most places now. I live in the midwest now and Culver's makes a good burger, that's my go-to if I'm in the mood for one.

I also have a soft place in my heart for cheap Tex-Mex, like Casa Ole. Plenty of better pizza out there but I still miss going to the Mazzio's in my hometown where we still had every soccer & baseball party and a good portion of birthday parties from my youth.

Taco Bell ruined their chicken soft tacos the same way when they changed from mixed meat to white. Sucked all the flavor out of them.

You are not alone on the cheap Tex-Mex. There are a few chain Tex Mex joints in East Texas that we will hit on our road trips at my insistence. Which reminds me of another nostalgic favorite that I can't get in Houston:

This picture makes me sad because fried okra really isn't a thing here in the midwest. That's one of the things I try to eat whenever we're back. You can occasionally find a chicken fried steak but it's not the same. The good thing about living somewhere with worse food than Texas is that it helps keep the weight off.

Also there's no such thing as steak fingers up here if you go to DQ. They might not be the same as when I was a kid either at the locations that have them but that's another thing I miss from childhood. A country basket was a fine meal.

Allsups was some of my favorite food until...

...I bit into a chunk of unknown origin about the size of a penny. I don't know if it was rubber, ligament, or something else but my jaw bounces when I bit into it. I've never eaten one since.

It's a local thing, but growing up in El Paso gave me a fondness for these. I guess about 90% of folks (not from El Paso) that I suggested try it haven't liked it.

Stopped by Pepe's Tacos right down the road from Chicken Oil, I guess it is technically in Bryan for the first time in probably 15 years, had an order of enchiladas and two crispy tacos....ah the nostalgia, tasted just like it used to. Place has to be in violation of a code or two but I don't care!!!! Wife said the red salsa took her back in time. Used to get a "coupon book" in the MSC first few days of a semester back in the day and you could get as many tacos you wanted for 25 cents a piece, the booklet was handed out at the MSC and it was literally called "The Coupon Book".

I will add 7-11 2 for $2.22 chili cheese dogs back in the day, the longer they had been on the roller thingy the better

Also, Weinerschnitzel chili cheese dogs with the grated cheddar cheese and chili cheese fries in Bryan.

The weinerschnitzels in my home town used a slice of American on the chili cheese dogs. The order of operations on making them was bun, cheese slice, dog, chili. It almost turned into a homogenous glob of cheese/bread/chili, and it was awesome. My kinfolks from Oklahoma and places in Texas that don't have them have been known to freeze a cooler full of chili cheese dogs when they're in Amarillo to take home.

Probably the only cringe worthy food I'll still get on a somewhat regular basis for old time sake is SPAM. Fried spam and American cheese sandwich grilled on white bread if I really want to double down on the WT.

Don't forget that the McDonald's fries used to be fried in beef tallow! As for nuggets...I remember buying a cheap bag of frozen nuggets in college. I only made them once. The meat was essentially ground up chicken fat and gristle. I literally took one bite and threw the rest away. Possibly one of the worst things I've ever eaten. Scarred me for life lol.

The chili cheese dog at Weinerschnitzel comes standard with a slice of American cheese you have to request the grated cheddar in place of the America cheese slice. Not proud of it but I am not around them much so when I am I order a 10 pack or two and eat them over the course of a few days. For whatever reason they taste great after about 30 sec in a microwave .

Another one for me, especially when up around North Texas is Braum's. Always have to stop get a cheese burger and shake since they don't exist in other parts of Texas.

I've got one where the nostalgia / memory lane did not meet the reality: White Castle

I remember getting them on a road trip in St. Louis when I was probably 5 or 6 and loving the little burgers. Probably just the concept was great for a kid. Fast forward 30 years or so and I see a WC driving through Indy and pick up a bag. Not good. A few years later I was somewhere else Midwest and I see one and decide to give it another try. Still f'ing sucked.

Krystal, on the other hand, slams. Southern twist on those Yankee WC bland-burgers. And their mini chili dogs? GTFOH. Awesome.

Grew up near Abilene which is literally the heart of Taco Bueno country, so Taco Bell was almost non-existent and an after-thought in the 80's. But when we had band or UIL competitions at Hardin-Simmons University, we were across the street from one of the few (maybe only?) Taco Bells in Abilene. Enchirito was a go-to, along with pintos and cheese (basically bean dip and chips). Strong. That random black olive on top made it fancy.
