My work travels are all in state and i'm on the road roughly once a week from Texarkana to Houston and east of DFW. Can the food board post your favorite under the radar taco spots and menu specifics?

Jalapeno Tree in Athens is a decent Mexican place, but the real sleeper is the Old West Bean and Burger just West of the square in Athens. Give them a go. Haven't had their tacos but their catfish, CFS, burgers, etc are fantastic. And cheap.

Jalapeno Tree is one of the worst restaurants I've ever eaten at. I've been to a couple of locations by request of my clients and now I explicitly tell them I won't take them to eat there. It's so bad that it's a running joke in our office.

DAAAAANNNNNG Which locations? I've eaten at the Athens location 3-4 times now and it's been pretty solid for a small east Texas town. My experience with the chain is completely limited to this location though.

I hear the Tyler location and Mineola locations are not great though.

The food truck in front of the Walmart in Athens is really good. It's taco/Mexican food. It's called taco Perez.

Trinity Tx has a stand that serves killer tacos for breakfast and lunch. No dinning room but have tables. Hit it over the years driving up to Tyler and it was a must stop for breakfast or lunch. Tacos by the Trax

I've driven that route a million times to visit in-laws, and I don't remember ever having a memorable taco. Really not much of a memorable anything. Marshall is about 1/2 way so if we do a meet and dropoff we go to Jalapeno Tree because it sucks a little less than El Chico.

Wait, I take that back (and I'm not kidding) -- the best tacos between Houston and Texarkana are at Dairy Queen. There's about 10 of them on the route, some better than others, all slower than molasses.

Truth being spoken here....

They're gringo tacos... crispy shell, tomatos, lettuce and shredded yellow american cheese, but damn if they ain't a fine representation of the gringo taco.

When looking for Mexican food, I highly suggest scouting places at 11am and counting the number of landscaper trucks in the parking lot. The place with the most trucks at 11am clearly has the best Mexican food.

Taquitos al Jaliscience in Nacogdoches is pretty good, theyre closed right now as theyre relocating to a bigger place but they shouldnt be closed too much longer

Leon's Taqueria between Longview and Hallsville is the best authentic tacos in the area. They're only open for dinner on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday though. T. Blanco's close to East Texas Regional Airport for Tex Mex. For Mexican Seafood, I really like DJ Mariscos in Tyler.

T. Blanco's was good. Ate there at lunch about 3 weeks ago. Popular with the locals!

La Palma is so good. I've not been over to the Christmas tree house in a minute.

If you come down to Houston give these places a try, thery are essentially the same so go to whichever location is most convenient to you......

1. El Taconazo (Food Truck). 4003 Fulton St, Houston, TX 77009, near downtown, next to a tire shop, no tables, order and eat in your car.

2. Taqueria El Taconazo (Food Truck): 7750 Long Point Rd, Houston, TX 77055, sort of between 290 and I-10, in fenced next to a place that made car keys that places is closed, no tables, eat in your car


At either of these places, order one thing...quesadillas de fajita, on corn (I guess flour if you must, but highly suggest the corn). skip the red salsa, ask for the green one, and ask for onion and cilantro if you so desire.

A few notes, these are not quesadillas the way most people think about them, they instead are a taco on corn (or flour), with fajita meat and some type of melted white cheese.

If anyone goes, I would love to know what you think about them. Grew up in south texas, I am hispanic, so I have eaten plenty of tacos in my 52 years. In my opinion, best tacos in Houston. You can order the regular fajita tacos if you are not a cheese person, but I highly, highly recommend the quesadiilas. I have never tried anything else from these places. Order 4 or 5 of them, get an iced cold Mexican coke, go back to vehicle and enjoy.

I can see the comments coming, yes the areas are sketch, go during the day if that makes you feel better but don't let that stop you from trying them!!

There used to be a Fuel City Taco in Lufkin. But East Texans don't appreciate good taco's so that location got sold.

Was it the same as the Fuel City Tacos in the metroplex? Cause those are pretty great.
