No, not looking for Brazilian steakhouse recs but where to find this cut in the grocery store or butcher shop. Haven't seen it at HEB or at meat markets near me on the Upper East Side.

Any tips on where I can find it?

TIA.

Costco has it some times. But, it's become increasingly rare.

+1 I'm always able to find it at HEB. Comes as a roast and you cut it into steaks. It's quickly become one of my favorites.

HEB league city usually has a pack or two out. If not, ask the butcher and they'll get it for you.

Shouldn't you be able to request it in a butcher shop? Just tell them to keep the fat cap on the rump cover, and you should be set.

Thanks for the tips. I haven't seen it in the HEB in Summerwood or Atascocita unless it's someplace that's not obvious. Might run up to Kingwood to find it if necessary.

for Kingwood, right when the beef section starts after the ground meat, the Tri Tips are first on the second or 3rd shelf. They mix the picanha in with those or it will be on the top shelf a little ways down. I have also seen a few in the aisle case when the sirloin steaks are on sale. There is only one picanha and one tritip per whole sirloin.

Yes. Aka - Top sirloin cap or coulotte.

Be sure it looks like the whole piece on the left. I've seen some grocery stores sell these together with Tri-Tip, but label them all the same name.

Negative.

Tri tip doesn't have the fat cap. It's tasty but not as flavorful as picanha.

I personally like it better if I'm smoking it like a small brisket. Tri-tip's grain runs different directions originating at the corner. Picanha's grain all runs the same direction and it's pretty easy to figure out. Tri-tip usually has more marbling.

If you want to do hotter/faster grilling like South American style, picanha is more traditional, but I think either one would be good.

True. But I always cut the fat cap off and cook it the same. I guess that's why I think it's the same.

Tri-tip has a good amount of exterior fat if you can find them untrimmed.

I have bought from this website before and been pleased. They have a deal where you buy one case and get another case free. I went in on it with 3 other guys at work. If you do a case of 18, you get another 18 free plus free shipping on all orders over $350. Comes out to $12/12 oz steak. Each of us got 9 steaks.

I found that and considered ordering from there but hadn't pulled the trigger yet. How was the quality?

Very good. Super tender. I've considered buying more. If you're in DFW let me know and we could split it. My boy Guga uses them and I have been pleased with it. Some other things I have considered ordering too. They do good work and the price is certainly good.

Not Houston in the Dallas suburbs these fokks have it available pretty much all the time.

Can call and see if they can ship some to you maybe in bulk? Or could call and have them make a bunch of the cut for you.

I always get it from Deep Cuts in Dallas. I've been impressed with every cut I've gotten from them and they're priced pretty fairly.
