Recently started drinking anejo. Never tried reposado. Difference in taste, smoothness, etc. : anejo versus reposado? Also, anyone have a favorite (either type) and why?
Thanks

I thought this was a thread about two Mexican bantam weights!

Best tequila I ever had was Cuervo platino. Don't know if anejo or reposado, but smoothest easiest drinking straight up tequila I've ever drank.

I just started trying sipping tequilas. I got an Anejo and a Repasado, and honestly I like the Repasado better.

I'm a whiskey drinker first and foremost, and Anejo tastes to me like a tequila trying to imitate a whiskey, but falling far short.

The Repasado has a bit of age and woody flavor, but it compliments the taste of the tequila itself without overpowering it with other flavors, which is more enjoyable to me.

But like I said, I've only been wading into the sipping tequila waters for a few weeks now, so I really don't know much of anything about it.

I never drink repasados. It's either silver in a margarita or a really nice anejo. Anejos can be fantastic if you are willing to spend the money. My favorite is Don Julio's 1942, but it is a bit pricy at $100.

Thanks. Realized I have a spelling error in the title. I understand the white or silver for cocktails and the anejo for sipping. Is the reposado plan b for sipping or for upscale cocktail?

Anejo's usually come off smokier to me, which I don't care for. 8 times out of 10 I prefer a Repasado for most applications, but if you are willing to pay the extra dough for the Don Julio 1942 Anejo, it's killer...

It can be for either one, and really just depends on the quality of the tequila and what you're looking for. There are reposados that are cheap that I'd only use in a margarita because they are not that good by themselves, and then others that are very good for sipping. Reposado is just in between a blanco and anejo in the amount of time it has been aged in a barrel. There are some very good sipping blanco tequilas as well. I wouldn't think that just because it is a white tequila that it must be cheap and only go in a margarita.

It really comes down to if you like the smooth oaky/woody/smoky flavor you get from more aging, or the more clean agave bite. Both are good in a good tequila...just different.

If you want to see which one you like best, pick one good brand and try their white, rep., and anejo and see what you think. My favorite is Herradura's anejo tequila, but they're all great. Don Julio is also great across the board.

Siete Leguas or Siembra Azul are two brands that are still hand-made the old-fashioned way. They taste really nice.

Other ideas for sippin', made from agave plants, but a different variety of agave than the Blue Webber used for tequila.
Del Maguey Tobala - mezcal
Hacienda de Chihuahua - sotol

I really enjoy the Del Maguey line of mezcals.

My go-to's are Hussong's for Reposado and Espolon for Blanco. Both are incredible by themselves and are better than most of the 'name' brands at a lower price.

My opinion, if you have to eat a lime to enjoy the tequila, it's crap tequila.

I'm not saying it's bad because it's actually very good and my favorite Cuervo, but branch out more. Try either of the ones I listed above.

Thanks for the responses. I will branch out a little myself and try some of the reposados you all referenced in addition to the anejos I recently picked up.

I have noticed that I seem to not feel bad after having a little too much of the good tequila as opposed to having a little too much of a good whiskey. It might be my imagination.

+3 on the 1942.

Stuff is amazing but pricey as hell.

I'm a big fan of Solorzano. All three are smooth, but the Anejo is harder to find.

Looking at price points of about 25/35/45 for blanco/reposado/anejo.
