Not my personal fave, but the Tostada Burger is never a wrong choice at this fine dining establishment.

The Beanburger at Orderup is even better than the Tostada Burger at Chris Madrid's

I agree on this being an impossible question. Too many subtle differences that nobody gets all together.

Case in point. I like Orderup better because of the fresh homemade chips, tastier beans, and chipolte mayo. CM probably gets a slight edge on the patty itself.

I'm on a quest to find the best burgers in Texas. I'll post my thoughts tomorrow.

For me, it used to be Miller's in Houston. The bun wasn't run of the mill, the patty was greasy enough to bind the ingredients together without being a wet mess, and the fresh cut fries were an added bonus. The last time I went, though, everything had changed and I'd rank it towards the bottom.

Don't you have an ownership interest in Orderup?

Chris Madrid's has okay burgers, but nowhere even close to the best. The best burger in Texas is the cover burger at Alamo Springs Cafe.

Supposedly it's at The Grape in my beautiful east Dallas hood. Only available on Sundays. My wife's had it but I haven't.

For Dallas local I really like Keller's on NW Highway. A burger, tots, and a 12 pack of Miller High Life for about $15. And you get to talk to some biker chicks on a Sunday afternoon.

Indeed Sooner, however, you will find my analysis to be perfectly objective.

I'm not saying Orderup is the best in TX (Neither is Madrid's)

Ray's Drive In in Lufkin is pretty legit

The one pounder w/bacon and cheese at Rocky's in Devine may be my favorite; outf'nstanding burger

The jalapeno cream cheese burger and bacon bleu cheeseburger at Roadhouse in Bastrop are awful dang good

Also, the Wheelock store on OSR heading towards Normangee are better than about anything you'll find in town (although a bacon cheese Freddy burger with Death is right up there)

2nd on Kellers, but I agree not ONE burger joint puts it all together.

Seconded for Ray's in Lufkin. While you're there try Mom's Diner as well, they've got some great burgers.

I travel the state a lot and one of my hobbies is seeking out the best burger (and BBQ) in the state. I have mainly used Texas Monthly's List and recommendations from locals as a guide. I've eaten the majority of the burgers on that list.

The Grape was mentioned above, it topped the Texas Monthly list. I've not had it because I'm never in Dallas on Sunday afternoons. I have a date with this burger next month.

My favorite burgers are found in Dallas actually. My #1 came from The Porch in Dallas. The Stodg will be tough to beat.

My wife's favorite is the Black and Bleu Burger from Dutch's by TCU.

I am also a big fan of Twister Root in Dallas. Great burger, cool place.

The best I've had in Houston is at Max's Wine Dive (also in ATX). Everything on their menu is amazing. The burger is no exception.

The best I've had in San Antonio is at Fatty's Burgers and More. Great homemade, greasy burger.

The best I've had in Austin is at Roaring Fork. I love this place. Great food, great menu, great price.

The best I've had in Corpus is at Rod N Rolls. They serve up a big burger. Not mind blowing, but solid burger.

Other notable small town burgers:

Jalapeno Cream Cheese at Koffee Kup in Hico, TX.

Gene's Tasty Burger in Wichita Falls, TX (GREAT old fashioned chili burger).

Aguados in Corsicana has a great homemade style burger. This is the ultimate local restaurant because it's basically a few tables setup in a plumbing supply store. Very weird. Can't argue with a good burger though.

A couple of "local" burgers that I like:
I live in Conroe and have been a fan of Burger Fresh for years. Their sweet jalapeno bun really makes this burger. The patty needs some work.

My favorite in College Station is Chicken Oil. It's just a good burger. Not that different than Koppe Bridge actually, but the overall menu makes Chicken Oil my favorite.

My favorite chain place:

Without a doubt Five Guys. Love their handmade patty. Throw some fresh jalapenos and hot sauce on there.

Novel, non-traditional "Burgers":

Orlando's in Lubbock has a burger on their menu that comes out on garlic bread. Decent burger, nice twist.

Stover Boys in Bryan has a meatloaf burger that is just excellent.

Burger Tex in Austin has a few different takes on burgers. They have a Korean Bulgogi burger that is certainly unique. Very solid offering.

Overrated Burgers (In My Opinion):
Counter Cafe (Austin), Beck's Prime (Houston), Health Camp (Waco), Smashburger, Dry Creek Cafe (Houston).

Max'x.......so much disappoint.....i really REALLY want to like the place. LOCVE the Idea and the place. But their food BLOWS. I kept going back and hoping the previous time(s) were just "bad kitchen nights." Hey they happen! But no, ill go for happy hour and drink, but ill pass on thier food.

Maybe in the last few months that Ive been gone they have replaced their chef...again...but I doubt it. The kitchen killed that place for me, i thing they focused more on growing to Austin and what not and let the kitchen BOMB!

the stodg burger at the porch on henderson in dallas is the burger to end all burgers. fois gras mayo on the bun, and a fried egg on top, with applewood bacon.

wingfields in south dallas is damn good, too, but a little different.

and you can't forget about beck's prime in houston. the one on westheimer, not in the woodlands.

jucy's in tyler or longview, and ray's in longview are excellent as well. can't forget about butcher boys in nacogdoches! had my first hamburger there as a wee lad with my grandpa.

But damn, best burger ever.

Casino El Camino in Austin used to be the best until they got rid of their Mexican cooks and hired goofy hipsters.

Best burger I have in the state is from Top of the Hill in Benchley, a small town just north of Lake Bryan. A perfect combination of greasiness, fresh veggies and a slightly sweet homemade bun. I'll post a pic when I get around to it.

maybe its partly a nostalgia thing but I reallllllly think about burger boy all the time. I have not found a place in the tine yet that can satisfy my craving for a burger boy burger. Keep in mind that I am NOT a food snob though.

Alicia's Burrito in Alpine. I say this slightly tongue in cheek, but when you live in/visit far west Texas, finding a decent burger isn't the easiest thing to do. Alicia's is the best that region has to offer. I wonder if it's still around...

Used to work for a ranch on OSR just across 6 from Benchley. Ate regularly at what is now Top of the Hill. I think it was called Griffin's then. Nice, greasy burgers then too.

There are some times I went to Koppe Bridge when it was the absolute best, other times it was still good, but not unbelievably so. So when Koppe is on their game I say them.

Otherwise I have to go with the Coppell Deli.

I've been pretty partial to most of the burgers at the Stovers Cafe in Village Foods. Lots of good stuff there.

The Kobe Burger from Chef Tai's food truck is outstanding.
