I usually post on Wine but I wanted to give a shout to my favorite Houston bourbon bar. Rail Yard in Houston. No I don't work there but stop off on my way from work. I have been Hesitant to post about this because I don't want to share.

They have all the Wellers. Six different Pappy's , Eagle double rare and some Louis the something that everyone squawks about.

Prices are fair. I pay $18 for either the Weller 12 or the Weller Blue. They also have 5 different Blantons amongst lots of other rarities.

I love reading this thread but I'm by no means a bourbon connoisseur. My wife and I do like bourbon based cocktails though and I will sip some near or on the rocks from time to time.

What are the best two three bourbons that can hold their weight and not get lost in a paper plane or whiskey sour.

What are the best 2 or 3 $50 - $100 bottles to keep on hand for rocks/neat when someone that really likes bourbon comes over or I want to do some sipping?

I'm hoping for several of you to make a list so I can pick from the ones most commonly recommended. Thanks in advance.

I also live in Hill Country BFE so when I do get to a decent liquor store I need a good chance of finding it.

Lots of great options but here are just a few simple ones:

Mixers - Knob Creek, Larceny small batch, Russell's Reserve 10

Reasonable neat pours - Wild Turkey Rare Breed or Knob Creek 12 year

$50-100 range you got a ton of options:

Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Elijah Craig Barrel Proof
1792 Full
I also like some High West Barrel Picks but YMMV

But some good mixing bourbons that are also great straight up and aren't expensive:

Evan Williams Bonded
Old Grandad Bonded

I love rye In cocktails and my go to is High West Double Rye. It also is pretty damn good neat or with an ice cube.

WT101 is another great bottle to have on hand for cocktails/mixing. Really cheap especially if you go for the 1.75 and at 101 proof packs a decent punch. Old Grandad 114 is another, I actually prefer it to the WT101

Agree with ECBP as a great sipper to have on hand for bourbon guests. Would also recommend the JD SB BP rye or bourbon.

Wild Turkey Rare Breed rye is great for both neat and mixing. Old Forester 100 rye is a good mixer too.

My favorite easy to find bottles:
Old Forester 1920
Wild Turkey Rare Breed
4 Roses small batch select
1792 bottled in bond and full proof
Bardstown has some great sippers in the $40-$60 range
Knob Creek 120 and 12 year

Thanks for the recommendations I'm going to grab a few of these and start testing.

In our little local liquor store I saw a WR Double Double for $207.

Is this a good price for it?

Specs is selling it at $190. So if you want it, yes that's a good price. But I can't say it's worth it bc I haven't tried it.

I was worried it would be a drop off from the distillery exclusive, but it's not. Great pour, wish it was cheaper but I don't regret buying it. Dessert in a glass, and it's going to be a crowd pleaser with guests who aren't whiskey aficionados.

It's quite good. Can't say it's worth $200 for a bottle (what is?) but I didn't hesitate to grab one and I don't regret it.

I picked one up today at the Brenham Specs.

They had a couple more if anyone is looking for it.

I personally passed on the double double. Regular Woodford double oak is about $60. The double double is aged an additional two years in another barrel and for that, they more than tripled the price. I don't fault anyone for buying it, and I know it's been a very popular distillery only release for awhile, so this expression is exciting. But personally, when I spend $150-$200 on a bottle, it's going to have more perceived value for me. With the exception of their batch proof, Woodford's going rate of ~$200 for 90.4 proof special releases just isn't worth it for me.

Edit to add that Breaking Bourbon did a review of this bottle that was pretty underwhelming, and I'd be lying if I said that didn't influence my attitude as well. :-)

Are bourbon prices going to drop because of the tariffs on Canada and the loss of that market? Allocated bourbon scarcity gone?
