Flippers on both ends. I certainly won't lament losing the fly by night labels selling $200 bottles of MGP with fancy packaging and bull**** labels.

Let's just hope the flippers get very overextended on their inventory before the bottom really falls out.

Saw this posted on r/bourbon. Long article but a good one.

Bourbon started growing in popularity in the early 2000s after a long stint in the doldrums. Its comeback was helped by television shows like "Mad Men," which featured 1960s advertising executives sipping on bourbon through the day. By 2015 the industry was so hot that barrels were in short supply, bourbon enthusiasts were stockpiling and distillery workers routinely pulling 80-hour weeks went on strike complaining they were overworked.

Over the past decade production has kept climbing. Kentucky alone produced 3.2 million barrels of bourbon in 2023 and had a record 14.3 million barrels aging at the start of last year, according to the KDA.

While a decade ago bourbon makers couldn't keep up, now there is a consensus that they have overproduced.

"We're in a very serious correction right now which is perhaps overdue," said Ken Lewis, who owns Newport, Ky.-based New Riff Distilling. The Kentucky bourbon industry is making nearly three times as much as it is currently selling, Lewis estimates.

Some investors who jumped into bourbon to make a quick buck when times were good are now dumping stock, exacerbating the glut of barrels.

"The bourbon boom brought a tremendous amount of money into the industry and a lot of that was for the wrong reasons," said Lewis. "In some ways it's good riddance."

Alarm bells rang in the industry back in October when MGP Ingredients, a major contract distiller that makes booze for other brands, warned that some of its smaller customers were struggling to make good on their obligations to buy whiskey.

I don't think we'll get back to the good old days as to what you can find on the shelf but maybe we get to circa 2015 or so (ER, EHT, Blanton's all on the shelf)
Especially with Buffalo Trace having expanded their production capacity.

I just got an email from total wine that they have a colonel EH Taylor barrel proof waiting for me. $93. I haven't had it before - good bourbon? Good price? Picking it up tomorrow.

I have a great many points with them, I host a lot of parties. And I've gotten 3 rare whiskey selections in a row (been getting Blanton's gold for the collection). The next rare whiskey cycle won't announce results until March I think, so I think this was just a random thing.

in Katy. There is a Costco at I-10 and Grand Parkway that is on my way home from work. I stop there quite often.

I may have to make a trip. I rarely ever go to Costco for bourbon, but it might be time to start.

They get good drops. Pappy 15, GTS Stagg and another one just before Christmas. I missed it, of course. Their prices see cheap and they sell a ton.

They don't hold anything so you have to get a bit lucky.

I go to that Costco weekly and never even think to go into the liquor store! I just assumed they sold just the miller lite of liquors.

I had a sample at one of my local store with the owner, it was fantastic, smooth for its high proof point. Saw it for sale at another place but they were wanting $275 so I passed but part of me wishes I would have pulled the trigger

The monthly allocated drop is Saturday.

Otherwise nothing too crazy on shelves. Plenty of ECBP and Larceny BP. Highwest Cask Strength or Bourye.

Enjoy your time here!

Thanks guys. This wasn't even in their allocated section. They put it out on the shelf.

There is apparently a group that when they get allocated bourbons, they send it out to their group, of which I am not on, lol. But this one wasn't out where they put their "allocated" bourbons, so it took a bit for the message to get out. As I got there, there was a guy that was buying the last two off the shelf and the manager had to go get the last two from the back.

I now wish I had bought both of the last two that were left. Only Drams doesn't show a secondary market for this one, so I wasn't sure it was all that special. I was going to ask the board about it, but the guy behind me wanted it before I could even load TexAgs app.

LOL
