As a retired person to a soon to be retired person:
You no longer need excuses - if it feels good, if it's legal - just do it.

Depends on what you want in a rye. High heat and spicy? Or something that makes an old fashioned better? (I'm a rye in my old fashioned kind of guy).

I think Bulleit Rye is a staple, especially for old fashioneds.

I also enjoy willet 4yr as a sipper (banana hints for me), sazerac (very tame as a rye), michters shelfer is vurry good.

I recently got a bottle of Knob Creek 10yr Rye. Haven't really dove into it yet but will this weekend.

My favorite is probable High West Double Rye with MWND right next to it (not an entry rye due to price point)

I did buy a jack Daniels single barrel barrel proof rye at Specs on Saturday. That's going to be my Christmas Eve crack. 134proof!!

Thinking of getting the boss a nice bottle for Xmas. $200-$250 range. What would be the best recommendations? Thinking maybe a Blanton's if I can find one or something along those lines.

Tried looking through the thread, but hard to say as bottles mentioned have price points all over the place. I'm in CO if it helps at all.

There's a Blantons Black on the trade thread. In your budget and Japan Only. That's very unique.

Ok. Shipping can be an issue. You just have to ask seller to zip tie the cork down. Which will probably damage the wax. But it's a trusted seller.

The Weller Full Proof store pick is your best safe bet for in budget, unique, shipping, and high proof.

I know he doesn't want to ship but if you provide the label then that's as good as you can get. Toss him another $20 for the boxing effort + label.

Blanton's Black would be cool, especially if the boss would appreciate what it is.

You might be able to find a Weller 107 in a store for something somewhat reasonable.

A bottle of Stagg or even a EHT SB (for cheaper) would be good as well.

For the $100 ish range a Four Roses SBBP would be great or even Russell's Reserve or ECBP picks.

I'll ship a Blantons directly to your bosses house on your behalf for $250.

Part of it is how into bourbon is your boss? For non-bourbon heads, plain Blanton's seems like the holy grail, but for people more into it, it may not mean much.

You can get Blanton's SFTB for 200-250 online. Would be a stellar gift

He's into Bourbon and did the bourbon trail. His actual taste profile I can't attest to though. I honestly don't know if he'll really tap into it or not, but it's my last year under him so looking to have a nicer gesture than usual on the way out.

Does anyone know the day Specs is doing their big whiskey release at Smith St? Trying to plan to actually get there early this time

My guess is 27 or 30, but there's no real way to know as I haven't seen anything posted yet. All the rumors I've seen say it won't be in Austin this year though.

If you're in BCS tonight and not at betadawg's, you are missing out.

I made bourbon brownies and we're about to raid his bourbon room to decide what to open.

I had a pour at a whiskey bar this week and was also fortunate enough to buy a bottle this past weekend at my local shop. Haven't cracked my bottle yet, but I really enjoyed the pour I had. Some similar notes with the Jos Magnus cigar blend (Nancy Fraley was involved in both), but also some differences. Complex palate. Tastes older than its age. Rich, long finish - that was my favorite part. Oily and mouth-coating. The techniques they used on this release fascinated me. I was really excited to get a bottle!
