Did a little hunting in Birmingham/Hoover today. Pretty slim pickings. I did find a bottle of Eagle Rare in a very small store, but they wanted $160 for it and wouldn't budge.

I settled and got this Four Roses Small Batch Select for like $76. I probably got ripped off, but it was on my "to try" list and didn't want to go back to the hotel empty handed so I caved.

Anybody like this stuff?

It's fine. Nothing spectacular but solid. There are some sweet fruit notes that I picked up on and enjoyed, but I wouldn't put it in my regular sipper rotation. I'll probably try it with a few drops of water, and if it doesn't open up anymore, I'll throw it in with a coke to see how it does.

Kind of expensive bottle to be adding things to it, but I've got quality on my shelf at home. It won't hurt to have a bottle that's used for mixers.

Four roses single barrel is still probably the best bourbon I have tasted.

At the time I didn't know that there were a variety of them so I have no idea which one clicked with me so much. It's a shame really.

I keep small batch select in the standard rotation at my house. It's not limited release good, but better than most shelfers for my pallete. I enjoy it the most of the standard four roses lineup, not as much as the barrel selects, but more than the standard single barrel.

And yes, you definitely overpaid, it's $52.99 at Texas Total Wine.

It's part of the journey. We all have bottles like that. It's a decent pour, but the SBBS bottles tend to be a much better sip. And with ten recipes those tend to be the only 4Rs I keep on the shelf.

Just remembered that I watched a Brewzle video on YouTube about how Alabama liquor stores are owned by the state so they have designated drop days as well as a lottery at the end of the year.

I guess I should have had that in my brain while I driving all over the area earlier today. Oh well, what are you gonna do?

My goal while in Alabama is to find a bottle of Dettling. It's a small grain-to-glass distillery in the south part of the state that I haven't been able to find back home. I doubt they have distribution in Texas just yet, but I thought they'd be ubiquitous here.

Nothing in the 3 stores I visited today.

Was it regular ER? as far as i know being an ABC state they have to go by the published prices.

Now that i think about it Alabama might be one of those states that is state controlled and have both ABC stores and private stores, which is like the worst of both worlds (outside of NC).

Your friend Brewzle has made Dettling quite popular. Apparently, according to of his shorts, one of the recent drops he went to, it was one of the first things gone, even before Blanton's.
