Some dude in Austin got his storage unit broken into and they stole a bunch of his bottles.

Can you even report that to the police? "Hey someone stole all my bourbon that I got off the black market"

Then you have to convince the insurance company on the current secondary values?

I guess you could claim VVP on it like you would your wife's wedding rings and jewelry.

Not sure why it wouldn't be a thing? As you said, not really different than jewelry, guns, etc.

I've looked into it for wine. It's out there, but the main ones I found required you to have homeowners with them and those weren't competitive.

Found this:

"You may wish to insure each bottle separately if your collection contains individual high-value whiskey bottles (traditionally called "scheduling"). Scheduling is the more traditional approach to insuring valuable collections, especially when insuring whiskey collections.

Blanket insurance coverage is more of a modern and "catch-all" approach. With it, you have an aggregate amount of coverage, and it is associated with a per-item limit, or in this case, a per bottle limit. Once your aggregate is met, coverage ends. Blanket insurance can be more attractive for consumable whiskies because you don't necessarily have to notify your broker every time you buy, sell, or enjoy a bottle. As long as you stay within your aggregate and per-item limit, this coverage strategy works."

Please do! That would be great of to share your findings with us.

We are moving this summer so I might be interested in some peace of mind during moving my whole collection.

How many bottles on average do the fellas (or ladies) here have? I have between 15-20 at one time unless I find something I just have to have or is super rare.

When I moved cross country moving companies explicitly said they won't move alcohol. And if you.box it and don't tell them and something breaks/leaks, they won't cover losses.

I don't even know, but it's way too many. I crack everything and I'm not good at killing bottles. I like to drink a small pour of multiple things most of the time.

I have seen some intense bunkers from people over the last few years.

Most I've seen in person was 350 bottles. Two rooms and garage.

Oh his actual drinking stock was in his bar area.

Booze in general? About 40

Of that probably 12 bourbon, 8 whiskey, 4 scotch, 2 tequila, 4 vodka, 10 is a variety of brandy, gin, rum, liqueurs, etc.

I only have decent tabs on everything because I just moved all of it

This. The last time I counted it was around 150 but that's been at least a year ago.

This is a good number I think and pretty close to my house. Less non-whiskey for us though. I don't think I could ever have more than 50 though.

Haven't done a good inventory in a while, but likely between 250-300 in the cabinet and 40-50 open. Have a bad habit of wanting to try everything. I'm trying to get the open number down and planning to cut back on buying in '24 unless I run into anything special.

Also, that number doesn't really count the dozen or so each of Michter's and Pursuit United bottles left over from ambassador events.

I've started trading samples with people to try things instead of buying bottles. Helps me kill the bottles I have and figure out which ones are worth hunting.

Rough count of 35 whiskey/bourbon bottles, with about 6 or 7 unopened. Need to work on killing a few that were cracked a while ago. Also have about another 10 bottles of tequila, vodka and gin.

I've really slowed down on buying anything from newer distilleries. Most of my collection is single barrel picks of things I know I like, backups to regulars, and a good bit of older stuff I grabbed back before things started going too nuts.

For the newer releases and distilleries I have a small neighborhood club that meets every couple weeks. I do the shopping and we try lots of newer stuff mixed with the occasional specialty blind tastings where I'll mix in some more established stuff. It's been a good way to get newer guys into as well as try a wide variation of stuff.
