My modest haul from today. I was really surprised with the Blue Note. It's very smooth for being near 60% alcohol.
I picked up the blue note store pick at the CS total wine a couple weeks back at 119proof. Probably my favorite bottle in my cabinet right now!
Both are very solid.

From my understanding your options are Kill it before, Mail it, or take a chance on your bag not getting inspected as i believe bottles are supposed to be unopened. Could always pack it in an inflatable bottle bag and wrap it in paper to conceal how much it has in it.

I've never had problem with opens in checked luggage but I have only done domestic.
I've flown with both opened and unopened. I have had one break on me. I use duck wrap with clothes as the cushion wrapped around the bottle. I'm am going to try your sleeves though.
I use the sleeve to protect against spillage of a broken bottle or if luggage gets stored upside down in cargo hold. Tape should help keep the topper in place.
If you throw a couple of extra wraps around the topper and carefully peel off tape, you can reuse on the return trip.

I wouldn't use duct tape personally but it probably works. I just get a roll of saran wrap and basically shrink wrap the bottle. Use a hair dryer or stove to heat the shrink wrap to make it tight and it'll keep the cork forced into the bottle. Pack inside clothes and call it good. Bottle shippers would be good if it's a really nice bottle or you want extra insurance.
The inflatable wine bags in the center of your luggage have never failed me. They are cheap on Amazon.
