Never pay more than $100 for booker's, and even then it's a polarizing flavor profile. Try before you buy, it doesn't really carry much secondary value

Saw on another thread that they have it out at the downtown (Houston) Specs.

The Mighty Fine Batch is one of the best Booker's in a while. Great pickup

Found it at a Spec's in Northwest Houston off of Fry and Clay. I've never had Bookers before so hoping I like it and the total price including tax was $110 so it's not cheap but really cool wooden box!

I really like Booker's. At current pricing, I buy exactly one per year. I used to drink it a lot more but it really isn't a good value. I never get caught up in the batch names/variations. They are all good.

I had a glass of it the other night at a bar. I agree I thought it was pretty good.

There's 3 bottles on the shelf at the liquor store next to Costco at I10 and 99 if anyone would like some. Although it's a little more expensive than Specs.

Like others have said, tasting a variety to find what you like is key. Here's some recommendations of excellent bottles that are easy to find, won't break the bank, and will give you a taste of the major brands/flavor profiles:

**These are the prices I regularly see outside of Austin.

1. Russels Reserve 10 Year - $40 - High age statement, incredible value, one of the best from wild turkey that's always on the shelf.

2. Knob Creek Single Barrel Select 9 Year - $60 - High age statement, higher proof at 120, great flavor profile that will change your mind on Beam products. It is a single barrel but I've never had a bad bottle and some are exceptional.

3. Four Roses Single Barrel - $40 - People's opinion of Four Roses varies wildly, but it's one of the big brands and worth exploring. The single barrel is affordable, easy to find, and is a much better quality than their cheaper offerings.

4. Buffalo Trace - $26 - This is very easy to find here in the hill country, but may be a bit harder to find in other places. BT is one of the best value bourbons out there, and most of their other bottles are highly sought after and hard to find. Most people prefer Eagle Rare 10 Year but that's still harder to find depending on where you live. It a regular BT is a great way to see if you like the profile before you hunt the rare stuff.

5. Maker's Mark - I'll let someone else chime in on the best Maker's to grab because I've never been a fan. With that said, it's very popular and it's very easy to find unique single barrel picks at good prices. Grabbing a Maker's is essential in my opinion because it's a Wheated Bourbon and a different flavor profile from the rest.

6. Elijah Craig Small Batch - $35 - This is the traditional bourbon profile, full of flavor and easy to drink. This is the bottle I always point new bourbon drinkers to because it's so affordable and approachable.

7. Old Forrester 1920 - $60 - Old Forrester has a lot of great stuff you can always find on the shelf, and their high end stuff is excellent. 1920 is the most popular OF and worth picking up.

Bonus - Grab something local. It's a lot of fun to try bourbon from your state and take a tour. You'll learn a lot and might find some gems. I got into bourbon after volunteer bottling for Garrison Brothers when they were first starting. I love Garrison and the people there, but if you're just starting out and want a Texas bourbon I would try the more affordable Still Austin. It's $35 for their flagship bourbon and they do 4-6 special releases a year that are always great. The Fall release of their new Bottled In Bond series is absolutely fantastic.

I hope this list helps you land on some of the better offerings from the big distilleries. Curious to hear what y'all would swap from each brand, if any.

That's a great list to start with. I would add Wild Turkey Rare Breed, around $45 for 116 proof that's always a great pour. And I would probably go with the 4 roses small batch select ($52) over the single barrel, although the single barrel is a different experience per bottle depending on the recipe (which is fun to try and see what you prefer). Again, that was a good list you put together!

Great advice from Czar. Rare Breed and 101 are also some of my favorites.

For Maker's, their cask strength is one of my top bourbons

I used to really like OF1920 but I have pretty much lost interest. I strongly prefer 4R small batch select at that price point.

You absolutely nailed it! It's all about the experience of trying something new or having one of your favorites with family and friends.
Mr. Freddie has an amazing story about enjoying favorites with family

Mr. Freddie from Buffalo Trace

When I did my first Bourbon Trail tour, Freddie was my tour guide. Was awesome and remembered his advice: always share the good stuff with friends and family

So beyond the Stuff made at Buffalo Trace Distillery, here are my recs for ones to get and enjoy that aren't hard to find:

Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Russell's Reserve Single Barrel
Old Forester's White Label with the year (any and all of them)
Heaven Hill 7-yr Bottled in Bond
Evan Williams Single Barrel (best value on the market)
Makers Mark anything
Elijah Craig

I agree it is the best value but from my understanding if has been KY only for the last 2-3 years.

For a mixer? I had heard it was good value. I tried it the other day and I was very unimpressed, maybe a bad barrel.

It has been 3 or so years since it was last on the shelf in here in VA but before that, it was my go bottle. Could have changed the proof or age when they removed it from the shelves nationally, or i may just have **** taste, but it was always a killer product for 30 bucks.

This is a great discussion! Thank you all for the great comments.

My 2 cents.....

I have not seen Evan Williams Single Barrel in quite some time in Houston, my last bottle was very enjoyable.

The Evan Williams BIB is also not bad for the price, good mixer.

Glad 4 Roses Single Barrel is getting some love, the small batch select is solid also.

Also, liked the try local comments. Still Austin produces some really good stuff. The Red Corn Bourbon Whiskey is very good, as are many of their releases. Whitmeyer's Bourbon and Rye make a great Old Fashioned and their single barrel releases can be solid as well. Haven't been back in a couple of years but Blackland Rye was good

Is Bakers 13 a good pour? I might be able to get one, not sure on the price, but it should be close to MSRP.

I did see a bottle of Eagle Rare at Libations in Bryan today. I purchased a bottle of 291 instead.

I'd take the eagle rare over 291 every time, but if you enjoy the 291, more power to you.

I have 2 bottles of Eagle Rare at the house still. Bought a case @ $45/bottle last time I was there. Headed back in March. So I was not worried about that one.

I hear that. If reasonably priced it's almost always a grab for me. Ruined lots of friends and wife's friend's husbands by bringing eagle rare to dinner parties instead of a bottle of wine.

Picked up food at Angry Elephant tonight in South College Station. While I waited I had a pour of Stagg and had the last shot of Blantons. Interesting note: if you get the last pour and ask for the topper, they might give it to you.

Is that Woodford Sonoma Triple Finish good? It has been in the counter of my local store for a couple weeks now. Think it's a bit pricey.

Just grabbed it this evening, haven't opened it and leave on vacation tomorrow morning so not sure I'll crack it tonight. If I do I'll report back, see if my wife wants to have a pour with me.

If you are a Beam fan its worth the price at MSRP imo. That being said i'd probably just go with the regular Bakers.

What are the most outrageously priced bottles you've ever seen compared to the msrp? I saw an eagle rare for $399. Also a blantons for $499 and a weller 12 for $599
