Practice your active listening skills and see what motivates them. What are their life pleasures? Just like we do business with foreign businesses, you don't want to get down to business right away.
Don't be afraid to buy bottles they suggest every now and then. Even if it's something disgusting, pretend you haven't heard of it before and say "thanks for the suggestion, good looking out!"
Go beyond your self interests and ask the employee if there anything he/she is really enjoying right now. Build the rapport even further by going home with the mixers and spirits they suggested and make it that night. Return to the store later in the week and say "hey man, I tried making that drink the other night and it was fantastic! Or I think I may have done something wrong because it didn't come out that great, any suggestions?"
Before you know it, that employee will be offering you allocated bottles or asking if you want something from the back. And if you really want to show appreciation, if he hooked you up with a really rare bottle, crack it later that night and pour them out a sample.
At the end of the day, be respectful and courteous.
