Today I learned that WhistlePig is another name for Ground Hog.

Where is that from? I haven't heard of it.

Today's pick up from Elixir which is on the outskirts of Nashville, first time there, the owner was great and super knowledgeable. There was around 60-70 open bottles to sample. Ended up picking up these two bottles. Passed up a rare character exceptional series straight malt that was 13 yrs 7 months which was a huge mistake. Probably be back to grab that next month. The straight malts from rare character are heaven hill juice that is used for the Parker's heritage straight malts.

Going with beer tonight.

I just learned that yesterday. I had a sample of the Heaven Hill Select Malt Whiskey and it was great. First time I've enjoyed an American single malt. Definitely going to be on the look out for one of those rare characters now.

That is interesting! Maybe they're slow to update. Liquor King in Allen. They also had their single barrel offering.

A comparison is tough. It's a nice balance of familiar and interesting. Maybe the 4 Roses SBBS OBSO, without the pepper on the finish. The proof sips very smoothly but carries a nice lingering finish. I wish they disclosed the mashbill, but it is a nice pour nonetheless.

So of the new bottles I bought this week. Here is the order of how much I liked them.

1. JD single barrel rye
2. Russels 10yr
3. Rare Breed
4. Dickel 8yr
5. Makers 46

I expected great things from the JD rye, hell even my wife loved it.

I did not expect to like the Russel's more than the rare breed though.

That Russel's just matched what I want in a bourbon almost perfectly. Just so good.

I bought the dickel so I can taste what a super high corn mash bill tasted like. Wasn't a huge fan.

Wasn't a huge fan of the French oak in the 46 either. Gonna try makers 101 and if that's a failure I'm gonna give up on makers

Dickel is very nasty and has been known to have a bitter "Flintstones Vitamin" note.

Oh I am for sure keeping an eye out now.

What do y'all think of wilderness trail?

Big fan of the way they do things and their whiskey is good. Their rye is very popular, but I love their 6 and 8yr bourbon, though I think the 8 was a distillery only and haven't seen the 6 in a while. If I do see it, I buy it.

Their story is interesting as they started with their other company that provides yeast to most of the industry and a lot of the beer industry. They approach things from a very scientific approach because of that. Their master distiller, Dr. Pat Heist is well known and a cool guy. Sounds like a good ol boy until someone asks him a science question.

Did a TexAgs barrel pick up there last year and haven't bought any of their other stuff since because I kept plenty.

RR10 is one of my favorites, but I really don't like the SiB near as much. The private barrels on the other hand… haven't had a bad one yet. They're all fantastic.
