Finished off a FP store pick from Specs and TW over the holidays. Both were outstanding!!
Decided to check out a couple of stores in Corpus this evening. First place i stopped at was Yorktown liquors. They had a decent selection. Had a bottle of EHT SmB for 69 or so, but you had to be on the allocation list to buy, which i guess is fair enough even with the markup. Couple of 1792 variants as well. The one really intriguing thing behind the counter was some Knob Creek 18 at MSRP. If i hadn't spent a ton of money already this month i would have been all over that.
Second place i stopped at was a store called Bootleggers. Had a good conversation with the guy who working there. Nice guy and seemed to have a lot of interest in Whiskey. He mentioned that the owner was really looking to build up a good bourbon selection and for a new store it was actually pretty decent. Unfortunately they didn't have any American Single Malts. The are doing a points system for allocated stuff and he said minimal markup on everything, if there is a markup.
They just got some Ben Holliday variants and had a few out for samples. I tried the Soft Red Wheat Rickhouse Proof. Man that surprised me. I'd take it any day over Larceny BP and getting close to MM 46 Cask Strength territory. Has a very nice sweetness and does not drink at all like it is a 120 proof. I ended up buying a bottle of it, and if you like wheaters it is worth trying. The only other Ben Holiday I have had was the basic BiB that i bought on the way down. For a small distiller they are doing something right. I'd be really interested in a future TexAgs pick with something from them.

1792/Barton is like makers to me. Not flashy or gets a ton of hype but everything the produce is good. Hell Barton 100 is my go to mixer these days.
The soft red wheat is so good. Can't wait to try the Rickhouse proof because the regular one just needed a bit more proof to push it over the top.

It's very good. I finished a BiB pick from Spec's last spring and spent six months trying to find another it was so good. Finally got a new one and it's also excellent.
They're usually a great price too, so it's worth going back and taking a chance on it.

I made this very clear….an unexpected 3rd kid made me fall of the wagon. This was last Friday, little guy was moving around and even waiving at us during the ultrasound.

All of their stuff is great, but I have heard and read that their Rickhouse Proof and then their single barrels are a step up from from the Bottled-In-Bond. I have started to see the Rickhouse Proof a little more recently, but have no clue how you would get a single barrel. It might only be available to get straight from the distillery. They are also in the process of doing some finished whiskeys aged in their cave rickhouse called "Ancient Cave Collection" but I don't believe this has been released yet. Very excited for what Holladay has going on.

If I'm looking at this from a Harm Reduction approach, moist is a sustainable alternative and solution. Maybe a couple drinks a week.
I had a few Veterans that were strung out on crack. Me telling them to simply stop doing crack is laughable. The all or nothing approach is hard for some people.
I'm not implying that we're all alcoholics here….just some friendly advice.

Had a chance to meet rebelag62 this evening when he delivered the bottle of Colkegan that he picked up for me in New Mexico. This is the Cask Strength that Fred Minnick put at 12 on his Whiskey list this year. Decided to have a sample as I am unpacking my stuff. It surprised me. It still has the heavy Mesquite flavor that the normal bottle has but the extra proof brings in some other notes which add to the balance.
Is it the #12 whiskey of the year? no, but it is better than i expected and having drank the regular version. If you like heavily peated scotches you might like this, it is definitely different and im glad i have a bottle to drink.

HM stood out to me. Nice oak, leather and spice from start to finish. 1924 nice leather and oak up front but fall off pretty fasts. Fitz pretty meh all around.
