I took a bunch of Dragoon IPAs to go, but forgot to document them before I ran out. When I saw a barley wine on the list of to go beers, I asked how it was. The guy said it was quite good, but then he started to warn me that it wasn't a traditional English barleywine. I cut him off there and said I'd take it.
If it isn't an American style that is super boozy and barrel aged, I don't need it. This one delivers.

Ha, this reminds me of all the times I'll be passing through DIA for work sitting at the centurion lounge bar and the number of folks trying to order shots and liquor drinks at like 8 in the morning. They then proceed to get all bent out of shape when they find out it's only bloody Mary's mimosas beer and wine til like 1030 or 11.
Moving on to the more reasonable lunch beer - Pliny for President on draft.

Was back at SFO but didn't want CDUB to judge me for plunking down $20 for a Pliny so bounced over to the Admirals Club.
Ok I think the admirals club is vastly overrated but they recently upgraded and promised to have local craft beer in every location. Some are underwhelming. But the two best have been DFW (Hop and Sting NE Texas ipa) and sFO (Henhouse IPA).
Any other Admiral Club members who have opinions on the craft beers being offered.

I was disappointed they didn't have Pliny 4 Pres in cans, as I really wanted to have some Russian River beers as I SUP'd down the Russian River this afternoon. They said it would be a few months before they canned again. Had to go with other options at the grocery store.
Still came back for more on draft this evening. I'm always surprised by how early they close. Last call at 9:45.

Another day of Bs... beer, bikes etc. Rode back over to Outrider in Amesbury again. It's become my Friday thing. They had a new twist on the Nashville hot chicken sandwich today... Nashville hot chicken cordon bleu sandwich. Think Nashville hot with hot capicola and gruyere cheese. It was damn good, sorry no pic. I didn't have any beer that I have not already shown here but Wifey had their Mountain Sun Cold Stout, a stout fermented with Lager yeast. I talked to the owner and he said it was fermented at 67 so I guess it would be more accurately called a steam stout. It was delicious anyway, smooth and dry. Got back on the bike and rode across the Merrimack River to Newburyport and went to Riverwalk Brewing. I had their Half Step Rye IPA. The rye was very subtle, had to strain my tastebuds to pick it out. Other than that is was good and at 5.6% it was good for a hot day bike ride. 35 miles today.
Brought this back from Manchester UK at the tail end of a family vacation. Was happy to find some nice IPAs after being mostly disappointed with the beer selection at most pubs, which were mostly limited to macro brews or flat, low ABV ales.
This is me picking up some Trillium and Focal Bangers at a beer bar up here. I feel bad about buying non-local stuff, but it's not like I can just go get Focal Banger whenever I want.
Non-beer story that will only interest a tiny percentage of people - we did some wine tastings today. At the last place, right when we were finishing up, Django Walker came in with some people. It was a higher end place, with tables for everyone, so it didn't seem appropriate to yell "I dug your 2002 album, and your dad was awesome" as I was leaving.

Cool story, while we're sharing non beer musician encounter stories, I met Ray Benson recently at DIA. We were both standing at the United club counter trying to get our flights fixed after our DIA to AUS flight got cancelled. I turned to him and said anyone ever tell you look a lot like Ray Benson. Wound up shooting the **** for like 30 minutes there in the club. Really good dude.

So my high school had a thing about going backstage during rock concerts. The guys I typically went to concerts with never had the eggs to try and neither did I. Went to the Queen / Thin Lizzy Concert at SMU in 76 or 77 with a different buddy. And he had them. Outside the venue there was a backstage door with a bunch of groupies sitting on the steps. We just walked through them excusing ourselves as we went. Opened the door and we were back stage. Walked around and watched them tune the pianos and guitars a while till some roadie noticed us and contacted security. We were escorted out rather briskly but as we paused so the outside door could be opened I looked to my right through an open door in the hallway and there was Freddie Mercury standing there drinking champagne. He toasted us as the security guards shoved us out the door. Not gay btw.
Stopped in Paso Robles to break up the drive home. After a few wine tastings we hit Firestone Walker and did not care for the experience.
The bar/restaurant was dirty and the service wasn't great also, none of the barrel aged beers were available on draft. I thought I'd be able to get several 3oz pours of the good stuff, but you had to buy full bottles.

Try Barrelworks in Buellton next time. They have all the barrel aged and sour stuff on tap there. Was just there a couple weeks ago and had a pretty solid line up, to include some vintage sucaba on tap.
Also swing by the backroom in Solvang and say hi to Sandy & Chris and ask if you can do a day pass and drink in the back, always a solid tap list there.

Been awhile since I've had this and the first time out of a bottle. Was just talking to my buddy in the beer business and he says it's no longer available in Texas. Sad because it's delicious.
The cherry chouffe is my favorite. The Flying Saucer in SA has a couple varieties of the chouffe on tap right now but maybe they are using up old supply.

Just looked it up. It's distributed by Andrew's in the Dallas area.
Went to the Thirsty Moose Taphouse in Exeter NH for lunch today and had a couple of interesting beers. Thirsty Moose is a chain of 4 or 5 tap houses in Southern NH and they generally have 50-60 beers on tap. First I had "Bullwinkle". A hazy brewed especially for Thirsty Moose by Stoneface Brewery in Newington. Second I had a "Trouble in Suburbia " another hazy by Exeter Brewery right there in Exeter. This is the first I have heard of this brewery, apparently they have been open only a few years. The beer server told me it is owned by a couple of buddies. One is a pilot , the other is in sales so they brew on weekends or whenever they can. Both beers were good.
No hazies today.
I'm headed up to New England in October. 2 nights in Boston, 2 nights near Cape Neddick, and then 3 nights in Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park before driving back to Boston and flying home. Can you share your top 5 breweries/brewpubs to try along the way?

I tried to keep you close to I95. I don't know anything about brewpubs North of Freeport, I am sure there are some great ones.
Spending a couple days in Boston I would definitely spend one of them on a pub crawl. I would be at Union Oyster House for lunch and The Black Rose at dinner for their shepherds pie. Other pubs I would definitely fit in are: The Green Dragon, Bell In Hand, Durty Nelly's, The Dubliner but there are many more you can walk to. I would also try to eat Italian in the North End. Just close your eyes and pick a restaurant, they all seem to be good.
Trillium in Boston is a worthy stop.

Just got back from my Friday ride to Outrider in Amesbury. I had their Vapido Hazy which they just put on tap. It was very good. I hope streetfighter2012 reads this because while we were there they found out that they were just awarded Best New Restaurant and Best Beer Menu from Northshore Magazine which covers towns from north of Boston to the NH line.

Is it just me or has there been a decline of quality beer fest as of late? Thinking about GABF this year but looks underwhelming, certainly a marked drop off, in terms of both breweries attending and what those that are attending pouring, from when I last went ~ a decade ago.
Two of the festivals that have long been on my list are Firestone invitational and the big beers in vail. I was told that the Firestone this year was a fraction of what its been in years past and big beers was outright cancelled.
I don't know if it's a shift in interests that's taking away from the beer scene or what but it's just unfortunate.
/random thoughts after an evening drinking/hanging w/ a buddy.

The craft beer segment is hurting big time. Times are tough and it's a less valuable proposition to shell out money for your employees to travel to a fest to pour your beer than it used to be. I feel like that spend has shifted over time to more digital marketing and own-home events.
