Snow day beers!

Got 6-7" of snow Saturday night into Sunday morning, then another 2-3" of sleet on top.

My supplies are dwindling. I got a foot yesterday and another 4-5" today. I doubt I can go anywhere tomorrow, so I'm going to have to open some more wine to get through this.

I've been watching people out my window today trying to dig themselves out of a lot of snow on the roof of a parking garage. Lots of backing up and going forward trying to clear a path. Some successful, some gave up. Felt bad for them, but not enough to leave my apartment to help.

My cousin in Seabrook got about 2ft. Fiona is not pleased.

Their hazy IPA's are pretty much all terrible. I just don't understand this switch they're made the past 5 years. I get you are trying to appeal to the masses, but I don't drive 45 min out to JK for mediocre hazy IPA's. The past few times I've been out there they haven't even had a fruited sour on draft. I don't think I'd even put JK in my top 10 Austin breweries anymore which is sad.

Somewhat related note, what are the top Austin breweries nowadays? I went to meanwhile & st Elmo while I was at the in-laws over Christmas. A bit of a drive being up in Georgetown but outside of pinthouse haven't really found many worth a **** up north.

I think my top 5 right now would be:
1. Lazarus - I actually sat down with the owner for an hour or so a few weeks ago so I may be a little biased. However, they are cranking out incredible non flashy beers weekly.
2. Hold Out - I'm not a big fan of their IPA's but their Lager game is unmatched. Plus the food is incredible.
3. Austin Beerworks - They are an Austin staple and absolutely run their brewery the right way. Don't ever make any thing crazy or flashy but all their beers are solid.
4. Pinthouse - Another Austin staple at this point. The multiple locations is also a plus.
5. Meanwhile - This ranking is pretty much based on their canning program because I rarely make it down to the brewery… plus that place is like a freaking day care.

Honorable Mentions to St. Elmo, Zilker, Central Machine, Live Oak, and Draughthouse

Do any Austin breweries typically have a saison on tap? I really don't go to Austin anymore, just wondering.

Pour one out for one of the most divisive beers on here, that gin barrel saison from Adelbert's.

Speaking of Austin breweries, I'll always have a soft spot for JK but to jah's point it seems like they've strayed a bit. I have liked their lager beers more than any of the IPAs they've done though, for what it's worth.

When I was local, my top was Live Oak. Pilz was a mainstay for me. A lot of the places aforementioned were either up and coming or not around or ones that I never got around to trying when there.

I have a few left, still. We're telework and schools closed again today, but I expect OPM to say business as usual tomorrow.

Hold out does sometimes. They had a beet saison on for a while, which I assume was good, but I hate beets.

Like your list and i'd throw Southern Heights on there too. There are a few i still need to check out like Nomadic and Oddwood. And agree that JK has strayed, but i think several places had to prioritize survival and having a bunch of hazies in the lineup probably helps overall sales numbers.

I forgot about Oddwood. They would certainly be in my Honorable Mentions. Plus that Oddwood/Batch combo is pretty incredible.

I think for my top 5 i'd go the following...and i have all kinds of weird reason i'll rank these this way...but its my list! And I'm sure in 10 minutes, i'll remember an obvious choice that I forgot about and this list will be wrong.

1. Redhorn - Trailrunner is one of my "go to beers" and their stouts are fantastic. We've been going there since the original opened and love the vibe and the owners are great. Plus, having a trail system from the front steps of the brewery is HUGE for me. We rarely go to the newer locations, though I'll stop in the new one at the square if we are in georgetown. I have wanted to go to the Scottsdale Rd location since they brought on the Chef from greenhouse/cork & barrel. Dog and Kid friendly! yes we are those people and i don't care. But our kids are not allowed to run wild.

2. Austin Beerworks - This might be a 2a and 2b if I included both locations, as we have love for both the original and the Sprinkle Valley location. Beers are always solid, vibe is usually good. Dog and Kid friendly. Sprinkle Valley is a bit of an exception to the not letting kids run wild, since there's a playground/treehouse, but they are limited to being crazy in that area.

3. Meanwhile - Rarely make it to the brewery. Usually if we are flying in/out or picking someone up. It does get a little crazy there with the insane amount of kids, but if you put a playground in, i'm not sure what you expect. Our kids are expected to not be *******s, but have fun. But I mostly put Meanwhile here b/c the stuff I get in cans from them is all very solid. I almost always have some in the beer fridge.

4. Live Oak - Huge outdoor area. Great beers that are staples...i could drink live oak hefe all day.

5. Obsidian - don't get there enough b/c it takes FOREVER to drive there even though its not that far. A million lights and i have to drive past Redhorn to get there. Their beers are usually solid, and so is the pizza. Plus, I was always a HUGE fan of Doggett.

Honorable mentions that I like but we just don't go often enough. St Elmo, Central Machineworks, Central District, Celis, Old Gregg, Lazarus.

Then there are the places that are good enough to have beers at, but nothing will likely blow you away, but we somehow find ourselves there out of convenience or some other reason: Barking Armadillo, Rentsch, Bluebonnet, etc.

Today's Friday share beers. The IPAs were judged best from left to right. We decided the issue with the Sasha from Jester King is the Simcoe hops which can be catty in too large amounts. The Lady of the Haze was really good. Big fruity nose with a soft mouthfeel and a smooth finish. The Masterminds from Hop and Sting was really good also. It's more of a traditional American IPA with a little caramel. The Montmorency and Balaton bout 9 also from Jester King was very nice. A little funk and some sour but neither overpowering. Cherry pie with a dry finish.
Cheers

Did the More Beer tour in Amsterdam this week. I highly recommend it if you happen to be in Amsterdam. 4 Dutch beers in 4 different bars gets you a free T-shirt.

1. Death In Tijuana is an 8.0% ABV New England/Hazy Imperial IPA brewed by Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater.

2. Dutch Eagle is a 5.5% ABV Dutch Pale Ale originally brewed by Brouwerij Poesiat & Kater.

3. Kriek Vanilje Blend 2 is a 7.6% ABV Danish wild ale with cherries matured on vanilla beans produced by Baghaven Brewing and Blending.

4. Yeti Krush is a 7% ABV Cold IPA brewed by Uiltje Brewing Company.

Fulfilling my biweekly KinderHill quota here in the motherland.

Left I believe was the dunkel. It's a bit too malty for me but still great quality. Mine on the right was their kellerbier and I seriously can't get enough of that lager. A beer's beer.

If yall haven't been to their new location just SW of downtown Bryan yet, highly recommend! Great Detroit pizza rotation and some good indoor seating along with the wide open outside seats.

Just found out I've got a work trip to MA in a couple weeks and will be 10 miles from the Tewksbury treehouse. Never been to the state and will be working to find time to swing by the brewery. Is that the main location?

The main brewery is in Charlton. I'm guessing an hour and a half west of Boston. They do brew in other locations according to their bottles anyway. The Tewksbury venue opened a few years ago. They bought a failing golf course and added a pizza parlor. The beer is fresh Treehouse and the pizza is really good. I'm jealous.

Today's Friday share beers. Unlabeled bottle is homebrew Dark Mild. The standout of the day (besides my dark mild ) was the Sea of Waves from True Anomaly. The Monks Cafe was not good, the Gulden Draak Triple was delicious.

Prepared celestially for the boredom of the superbowl only to find out it's not on at our house. Yay. Triple is good, double might be better.

The rest of the house wanted to see the halftime show, so I dug out an old digital antenna. Good news, all three are quite nice. Triple on right is Hopception.
