In Germany this week, and I saw a few Russian 2and 3 stars at the Soviet Memorial in Berlin for a wreath laying ceremony. They looked surprisingly young for their rank. Made me wonder how many senior officer Russia has worked through during this latest war.

It is never confirmed.

In your article, it says Open source intelligence analyst Oliver Alexander was among several who noted a difference in the hairline and a facial mole between the commander and the POW.

I can't find any article that confirms it was him.

There is a report of him being involved in combat a year later

Quote:

A Russian "Storm Z" assault unit instructor speculated that the Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) removed Lieutenant General Andrey Sychevoy from commanding in the Bakhmut direction due to his poor performance. The instructor claimed on October 1 that the Russian military command removed Sychevoy from his position for conducting unprepared and unsupported counterattacks south of Bakhmut near Klishchiivka and Andriivka.

Any source that confirms he was actually captured? Seems a case of mistaken identity.

I visited that memorial in 1993.

If Germany had any self respect they would blow it in place and turn it into a park.

I don't care that the Germans are responsible for WWII. The communist Soviets were not the good guys.

If the Russians want to pay to have it dismantled and shipped back to Moscow, then fine.

Otherwise? Boomerooskie.

While I agree with the sentiment, it is a very US oriented one. I just spent some time in Dresden and while the opinion is very mixed the German people who lived under the soviets make a clear distinction between the soldiers and their commanders and political leadership. If they didn't make that distinction they would have to condemn an entire generation of their men.

The Military History museum in Dresden is great and has a whole floor dedicated to the cold war in Germany and life on both sides.

If the krauts hadn't attacked Russia who knows how WWII would have turned out.

Interesting thought experiment. Without a Russian front, and all the resources that went into that, could the Germans have defeated a beach invasion? If England had surrendered, would the US have been able to do anything from across the Atlantic?

There is no doubt the Germans could have defeated an invasion of France without an Eastern front.

Whether they would be able to invade England is a different question.

Since we are doing hypotheticals, absent the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact, would the Nazis have attacked Poland without coordination with the Soviets?

The only way this happens is Hitler is not in power and then everything is on the table.

What I think is a more interesting thought experiment is what if Hitler had been killed by the assassination attempt on 20 July?

The allies are on the beach in Normandy but haven't broken out yet. The Russians have just initiated their big push for the summer and are grinding down German units who have stand in place and fight to the death orders from Hitler.

Without Hitler could the Wehrmacht have regained power and been able to execute an orderly retreat on the eastern front? Had they done so they could have reduced their defended front by half as well as reduced their supply lines. How much would this have slowed the Soviets?

The piecemeal tossing of units into the allies in Normandy would have stopped and an actual reserve force built up to counter an allied break out attempt.

I think with the allies in control of the air over France the west was decided but the Falaise pocket doesn't happen without Hitler pushing his August counter attack that everyone knew was doomed. That's another 250,000 men and 10,000+ vehicles that are able to defend the Rhine.

If we can remove Confederate memorials and change longstanding names of Army posts, why not?

On another note, it looks like Ukraine planted a roadside bomb in Moscow and killed a Russian general. That's pretty crazy.
