In regards to the OP, like everyone else said, if he really wants military flying, go to a school with a good ROTC program (bias on TAMU CoC) or an academy. If he can get accepted to ERAU I'd be surprised if he couldn't get into A&M or an academy. It's a shame TAMU doesn't have an aviation degree with fly school included like others do. Id love for my daughter to do that one day.

A couple of thoughts. I was one of those A&M Class '77 graduates that had a pilot slot taken away due to the backlog in training and was offered to be released of my commitment to the USAF.

I chose to still enter the USAF as a maintenance officer. Two years later I was accepted to pilot training. End up making it a 20 yr career, flying the OV-10, A-10 and T-38 aircraft. Best 20 years of my life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want to be pilot and get the best training in the World, join the military.
If you want to eventually get to A MAJOR airline, join the military and go Reserve or National Guard. Or go active and you will be hired when you complete your initial obligation of like 8 years after training. Sounds like a long commitment, it is NOT. It goes by fast and you will have the best fun of your life.

Don't worry about the competition. If you set your mind to it and you can pass the physical you can get in!!!!!!
Right now the military is needing pilots. I had to compete on active duty to get into pilot training. I was meeting a selection board every six months picking 50 applicants out of 5000. I made it on the second try. Hard work and determination is all you need!!!!

Major in what you like, it really doesn't matter. ROTC, Academy, Officer Candidate School (those with a college degree but did not join ROTC) all are options.

They aren't.
The active duty UH-60A/Ls are being phased out for money purposes and make structural room for FLARA. That means all of the UH-60Ms are staying. It's a money thing. We don't have enough to swap 1 for 1 material or units with less material.

For everyone else talking about army Fixed wing (FW). It's a mixed bag. Yes, army pilots are all Rotary wing (RW) and then active duty pilots select an advanced airframe - AH64, UH60, CH47, FW. Guard reserve pilots already know whicu advanced airframe they have.

On the broader topic of Army FW, we are divesting turboprop ISR for turbojet ISR. About 25% of the current size. Lower density fleet with the current concept of employment means tons of flight time. We are concerned about burning people out so the army is working to diverge future ISR organizational to reflect 3-4 aircrews per tail rather than the 1.5 per tail used by the rest of the Army when building andanning aviation units. However, the priority air transport mission will retain turboprop King Air 200s and Beech1900s, and turbojet Citation IVs and Gulfstreams. The current fleet size won't change in any meaningful amount.

Back to ISR transformation. It's a boondoggle right now. If Congress gets out of the way (no more Cars) and the Army doesn't flub it then the divest to invest model will bring government owned government operated Global 6500s, called HADES, into the field around 2027-2028. Until then... It's a selfish bloodbath among the FW warrant officer population. Very high school drama and Korean war POW camp like. No code of ethics and no one is your friend.

Don't let that dissuade your kid because his timeline aligns for army FW aligns well after this gulf in aircraft is recovered. All services have a 10year obligation for pilots so that's even. If he wants to fly for the airlines... Go Reserve/guard in any service and pick up airplanes. If he just wants to fly I highly recommend the Army WOFT. It's by far the best and closest guarantee to flying.

My bone fides: current AD, FW just move from an ISR organization and sat in many of those "lower echelon" planning meeting to figure out how to actually do what the generals and congressmen direct us to do.
