What was it like? Did you enjoy your time there? How are the people? Were you able to travel easily?

I wasn't stationed at Graf, but I did several training "deployments" to Graf. I also spent a lot of time in different Army "schools" in Vilsek which is about 12-15 miles from Graf. It is Beautiful in that part of Germany. The locals I interacted with were always easy to get along with. Almost all of them speak English, but it is helpful if you can speak and/or understand German. Traveling is pretty easy. However, if you miss your exit (ausfahrt) it might be awile before you can turn around. If you rent a car or have access to a car, be warned that they sell gas by the litre NOT the gallon. If You have an ID and have access to American Army or Air force bases, gas is MUCH cheaper than buying it on the economy Prague is about 140 miles away ( i regret that I never went to Prague when I was in Vilsek) Graf and Vilsek both have pretty good size PXs if you have access to the post. There is a lot of good beer. Most German towns of any size have at least one local brewery. If you like soccor, most of the town have "football clubs."

It gets damned cold in that part of Germany in the winter months

What are you going to do there? I spent 6 months there TDY but it was eons ago…Brigade 75 out of Ft Hood. The only advantage to being stationed at Graf instead of another Germany post is you won't be sent TDY to Graf. Being stationed in Germany was an underrated perk of being in the military. We traveled somewhere darn near every weekend. Most of the posts are closed from what I'm hearing, but you can have a great time on any military post if you make yourself get off post and travel.

Bavaria is great. Living in Europe is awesome. Traveling while stationed in Europe is even better. Some of the outcome depends on your personality.

I had three assignments in Germany and loved them all. None at Graf, but I was TDY there and it's a nice area.

I totally screwed up my only chance to go to Vilsec. Got ahold of my branch manager, they said they had one E5 spot there, and I told them let me make sure my wife's on board with moving (report date was within a month of baby #2s arrrival so timing wasn't ideal). Wife was ok with it, couldn't get ahold of the manager again. By the time I did several days later, the spot was gone and I got orders for Korea. Probably the biggest regret of my military career.

I didn't want to go. Tried to get out of it. Overall I enjoyed the people I was with but not the work. It was very hard to go anywhere outside of where we were (Camp Casey/Hovey) so just drank heavily for a year and played lots of softball and golf. The few times I made it to Seoul I enjoyed it and I would love to go back now that I'm a civilian. The food was great. Winters were miserably cold.

*This was 11 years ago. I had already done 2 years in Iraq and then got hit with a year long tour in Korea (all within 5 years). They had opened Area I up to Command Sponsorship but that would incur a 2 year minimum obligation and was hesitant to bring the family off the bat. Plus, and I knew this was highly unlikely, in the event SHTF I didn't want my family with in 15 miles of the NK border. I figured I'd be in enough trouble and didn't want to have to worry about them if things went south
