He was the trigon bull over the band when I was in. Remember him being a good officer.

BQ87's fish buddy.
Yep! There will never be another Aggie 4-Star general in my lifetime, if ever.

My dad and this guy apparently did not get along but we're both fired up.

Tim Green 86 was a 2 Star General in the Air Force.

Poor old class of 79 only has a 1-star general to brag about

An Aggie buddy noted that Smith doesn't wear his Aggie Ring. Scanning photos on Google, I can see his wedding ring in some, but never the Aggie Ring.

Any close friends know why?

Don't know him personally. His and the current Commandant's restructuring of the USMC is severely limiting the Corps ability to project force ashore. As a Retired Marine O6, I ma not excited, and share this opinion with scores of retired Flag Officers.

Was going to reply to this comment here, but feel it's more appropriate to go into this other thread here

MASSIVE changes coming to USMC

I don't know him, but as an 0302, I got in the habit of leaving it at home. So, I'd guess it doesn't mean he's no longer fond of A&M/the Corps.

I understand. I left the ring at home while farming. Too dangerous. One of my Aggie buddies (retired Marine) mentioned that as a young LT leading a platoon he would leave the Ring at home to avoid antagonizing the enlisted.

And in a world of Academy ring-knockers I can believe he didn't want to be seen as one

I know one Aggie that lost his ring someone in a farm field. And a classmate's dad, who is a vet, *supposedly* lost his ring to the GI tract of a farm animal.

I was worried less about losing the ring, and more about losing the finger it was attached to.

He was wearing his Aggie Ring when we met for our class reunion in November

Which is why I stopped wearing mine early into my career clambering around on military equipment.

Part of leadership is messaging. What you wear and how you wear it says a lot about you. Not as some BS image consultant crap, but as one of the most temporary members of the team, Marines quickly decide if you're "in this with them" or not.

Try being an officer in dry uniform with gold in his salute while your muddy and tired Marines drag themselves back to back to their black-mold barracks rooms. Good luck.

I only wear mine on weekends, not in uniform. We had a mechanic in one of my old battalions get a ring avulsion while working on a Humvee.

Do NOT Google image search that.

I came close with my wedding ring during my first deployment. I was loading stuff in an uparmored humvee, stepped back and my ring was caught. Fortunately the ground was close enough that it was just a larger than normal step but I still got a good cut on my finger. Had I slipped or fallen from higher I would have been in a bind. Started wearing my ring on my dog tags after that

I missed any ring horror stories, but I know of one farm who lost a finger when he jumped off the back of a semi and caught his wedding ring in some structure

My brother was welding and a spark or bit of slag got under his wedding ring and burned him pretty good because he couldn't get rid of it quickly

Bottom line, I understand both the safety aspect and the "don't flaunt it" aspects

Looks like the nomination was finally released from "prison" and the new Commandant of the USMC is an Aggie.

I'm not a Marine, although I have a son who is headed to OCS in May. I was wondering if anyone has a sense of the "woke" risk factor for General Smith.

Since he was in the Great class of 1987 and not the worst class of 88 there should be ZERO risk for woke factor

Woke risk factor? Zero
Integrity? Absolute
Moral and physical courage? Demonstrated at every rank
Fidelity to his oath of commissioning? Resolute

Our Corps is in the most capable hands. Have known him since 1985. Observed him as a cadet, as an officer candidate at OCS, and a company grade officer. Followed his career closely in retirement. His continuous promotion through the ranks to his present grade was no surprise. Ranks with Ormond Simpson and Raymond Murray as among the best officers ever commissioned from Texas A&M into the Marine Corps. Proud to call him a friend.
