I'll be in Paris on November 11 and know that 55 Aggies died in WWI, mostly in France. I would like to find any Aggie buried there and pay my respects. I've searched the internet most of the evening and cannot find a list of the 55 Aggies and where they are buried. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Interesting post. I guess you would start with a list of the names. Then see if the cemetery has a listing of all burials. For the former, I'd check with Dethloff and Adams, authors of Texas Aggies Go To War. I don't think I've ever seen such a list.

On a related note, back when I was a cadet, the trees around the (now) Simpson Drill field had little plaques with the names, and the location of their death. The plaques are gone now, I hope they are in the archives somewhere. While a lot of them read like a history of WWI, with the famous battles, I know at least one simply said "Submarine". And I think another said "aeroplane", though I am less sure about that.

Here's an idea. The West Gate Memorial, which was moved to construct the Albritton Bell Tower, has a listing of the names. I have yet to find a photo where the names are clear, but maybe you can ask someone at A&M to take a photo or make a list for you.

Here's the best photo I could grab

Army..............Let's see how well I can do this off the top of my head after 50 years.

In recognition of the splendid participation by the A&M College in the World War and the heroic sacrifices made by her sons, this memorial is given by the classes '23 '24 '25 and '26. Sir.

To any smart ass that comes on and says "hit the floor", you have a date with my trash can about 3:30 some morning and you better hope like hell I only put water in it.

Thanks for the advice from everyone. Yes, I've been trying to get a better photo of the memorial, but haven't found a one with enough detail to read the names. I have a couple of nephews there now and will get them to snap a high quality photo. From there I can do some research...and if worse comes to worse, I'll just cross check each name on the list with each headstone. The headstones will indicate who was from Texas...so that might help. If I find any, I'll snap a photo and post here.

From Rabid Cougar's link. Hmmmm. Fifty-seven. Not 55 as in today's campusology. And if you look at the photo of the West Gate (WWI) memorial, their appear to be only 52 names.

Wonder what the difference is.

????????

I am cross checking each name on the list from the Longhorn and the Book "Aggies Go to War" with the American Battle Monuments Commission Website which operates all the overseas cemeteries.

It gives you the name of the Cemetery and the Plot, Row and Grave Number.

In "Ags Go to War" there are 54 listed. It shows if they were KIA, Killed in Training or died of illness.

Interesting. He is listed as KIA on "Ags GTW" and in the Longhorn but listed as MIA on graves registration.

They must have known he that he just vaporized.

I wonder how accurate that is. I guess we had no recorded casulties in the Spanish-American War or Phillipine Insurrection?

Is Crocker Hall named for him?

A memorial at the south entrance of the Corps of Cadets Center is dedicated to the students, alumni and faculty members who served in the Spanish-American War from 1898 to 1902. Incomplete college records indicate at least 89 men with ties to A&M were in the war, according to Texas Aggies Go To War by Henry Dethloff. The American Memorial Association established the memorial in 1953.

I did a search of Dethloff's book and it mentions no casualties.

Difference in TAGTW, and 1919 Longhorn:

Ehls in TA, Ellis in LH

Easterwood in TA, not in LH. Died May 19,1919, so don't know that he counts as a WWI death, though he was a WWI veteran.

Pvt. John Matthews in TA, not in LH

Captain George Wallace in TA, "Wellage" in LH

2LT Elmer Allison in TA, not in LH. Died Feb 19, 1919

Jim Woodson in TA, not in LH

Barfield in TA, not in LH

Private Marson Curtis in TA, not LH

LS Suber in TA, not in LH

John Burford in TA, not in LH

A.G Hays in TA, not in LH

Wonder how this compares to the monument.

The Gold Book, Vol. 4 No. 4, an alumni quarterly from 1919, profiles 49 Aggies who died.

Fifty-three oak trees were planted in 1920 around the drill field, but today 54 are fitted with plaques on their trunks, one for each who died.

A 1978 article in The Eagle cites 55 trees and 55 flags flying over Kyle Field.

An article a few months earlier in The Battalion notes the 52 names are on the stone memorial on Main Street and that the University Archives reports 53.

Freshmen in the Corps are told to memorize from their cadence guidebook that 55 were killed.

In Texas Aggies Go to War by Dethloff, he lists the names of 54 Aggies.

1919 Longhorn list 38 on its "Honor Roll"

1920 Longhorn list 51 in its "Gold Star" section
This is very interesting because it has the guys picture and a half page write up including how he was killed. The one that I surmised was vaporized? Killed by direct hit from an artillery shell.
