ag-bq-seventy - if your illegal statement is about what I did, it wasn't illegal at all. I didn't login and check people's grades on the CICS system without their knowledge. I simply looked people up in the campus directory. I think that type of system still exists today but it has a nice web interface now instead of the old clunky green screen.
Back in that era, you could get name, classification, major and phone number from the directory.
This was always fun - that's interesting, your door card says that you're a Junior Petroleum Engineering Major but the campus directory has you listed as a U2 HIST major. Hmmm. Oh, I just changed my major last week. Right.
The real fun came when it was time to order class rings. The same guys who were the leaders in "let's order our boots before Elephant Walk of our sophomore year" weren't out front leading the charge to have us all run out and order our senior rings together U4 classification (especially in my era with the 95 hours requirement) seemed to be a major hurdle.
