Airplane Driver...Yes that was terrible. 14 guys died in that crash. I was out in the field that day, one of the guys aboard was a tentmate of mine. A major...a new guy, had just come back from his first field duty.

Just the opening I need. Failed to serve myself, but am the proud father and father-in-law of a couple of brand new USAF 2ndLTs, who have been officers for all of 170 days as of Veterans Day.

Daughter currently in UPT, son-in-law is an engineering officer. In addition, he is prior enlisted. Counting enlisted, USAFA prep school and USAFA, he's been in over 6 years.

Too poor and wild to attend A&M, nevertheless had a sense of obligation to serve our country. Made E-5 and traveled the world on a 100,000 ton piece of Americana (USS Carl Vinson - CVN 70)

FYI - Loved the respect/ attention we got from other NATIONS when we parked our "lil boat" right off their front doorstep...

Reminds me of a conversation I had with a naval aviator I met at a Chamber of Commerce luncheon. Found out he was my age and asked if he was ever in Viet Nam. His response....

"No, but I came within 800 feet plenty of times."

Priceless

That is correct.

And the 1/8 Infantry (Fighting Eagles) along with other elements of the 3rd BCT spent their last deployment at FOB/COB Garryowen in southeast Iraq. My wife was the battalion surgeon.

As you probably surmised FOB/COB Garryowen was initially stood up by elements of the 1st Cav, including the 7th Cav.

RA, 1974-1978, Armor/Cav, 1CD and 24ID. Never heard a shot fired in anger. Lucky me.

USAR/TxARNG, 1979-2003. After about 20 years became a REMF QM type. Again, never went anywhere, no dangerous stuff. Wasn't meant to be for me, I guess, to ever be in combat. You serve where you serve.

God Bless America.
