My dad was an AF enlisted nuke tech from 1950 to 1973. He retired as an E-8. After WWII service, and a few years as a civie, he went back in the AF and was stationed at a top secret installation at Grey Army Airfield, Ft Hood.
My earliest memories are from our little house in Lampassas.
His outfit went TDY to Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM to get their training. Dr Teller, one of the original nuke scientists, was one of their instructors.
In 1952, the whole nuke outfit at Grey AAF was transferred to Manzano AB, a nuke weapons storage site on the outskirts of Sandia Base.
From 1957 to 1961 we were in England and Turkey, and my dad was working on tactical nukes. From 1962 until his retirement in 1973, he worked in SAC, supporting both aircraft and ICBM nukes.
I have no doubt that the Minot nuke incident would have never happened under the old SAC procedures that my dad worked under.
Gen Tony McPeak was the worst thing that ever happened to the AF.
I served as an AF weather weenie from 1970 to 1991 and retired as an O-5.
