This year there is a new fish cut being enforced. It is a "4x4," meaning a 4 on top and 4 finger white walls. Correct me if I am wrong but in the past 20-30 years it has been a 1-2 on top and 5 finger white walls. Thoughts..............

no. freaking. way. I am texting all my buddies to find out if this is true. In some ways, I think that new army is going to do a lot of good for the corps. Cutting down on some of the BS the fish are put through is a good idea... but getting rid of fish cuts? come on.

Some of the outfits force pissheads to get extremely short haircuts which pissed me off. But fish are the "recruits" of the corps, I don't see a reason why they can't keep the fish cuts.

We were told to get a 4x4 as sophomores, about 5 years ago. I don't think the 5 finger white walls is any older than 25 years, but I could be wrong.

In all honesty, I think it's good that they're doing something to make fish look less weird, but I don't think getting rid of fish cuts was the way to go. fish are some goofy looking creatures walking around campus. They have this almost bald head, they walk around with shirts tucked into their pants/shorts, they're wearing socks that come half way up their ankles, and they've usually lost a little bit of weight so all their clothes are now loose on them.

I hope the new Commandant isn't trying to make things like the service academies. When the Pointers came down and stayed with us, none of them had what I would consider a squared away hair cut.

It would help fish get dates more often if their heads weren't so bald....

Haircut standards for your new fish Jones change with the times. Go luck at old Aggielands/Longhorns. A buzzed haircut - I have no idea what the 'fingers' thing is about - was in/out of fashion over the last several decades, since the '50s. Lots more things impact turing Joe High School Hairy into a good fish Jones than having a 'basic recruit' type haircut. Short is fine; let the times define what 'short' is. The Streetfighter knows this. I trust him.

Oh, it typically does, depending on who's giving the haircut. They'll either start the fade right at that curve where the sides start turning to the top, or they'll fade on the curve, so it'll look kinda like a reverse bald spot.

Now that's bad for Corps recruiting. Fish, and upper classmen need to have pretty girls, it'll be good for recruiting.

And by and large, fish do pretty good with freshman girls in the south side dorms.

Good. Fish cuts are retarded. I'm also glad I'm in the navy where its okay to meet standards and not have to be stupid about them.

Well, I couldn't have just come out and recommend that everybody join the Band and bring back making their dates wear nice dresses to the games.

So, I decided to laugh it up a little. Besides, another piece of advice that I got from an upperclassman is that having a girlfriend is like taking a 6 hour class with a lab that you don't get any credit for.

Butts have to get a 3 finger? I never had my hair that short when I was a butt. We should keep the fish cuts, and make everyone else, ph's through zips be within standards. That's how it works in the real military, recruits have s****y haircuts, but once you are through basic training you maintain your service's standards.

3 fingers high and tight from fish to zip year in the fall; it was the redass thing to do in the 80's.

I, and all my buddies, always had white walls, right up until 2nd pass zip year. Of course most of us dropped it down to 4 fingers and heads, and some dropped it down to 3 fingers as white belt.

I think during the Spring as white belts some of us would sometimes go ~2 weeks without hair cuts. Still well within standards.

I can see letting fish grow it out a bit for the spring semester, but in the fall it should be extra high and tight. I still get white walls when I get a haircut.

Thank you for this new and wonderful response for me to use the next time my mom asks why I'm not dating anybody.

Let us not all forget, the Corps was around for nearly 80 years before white walls were ever heard of in the fish or any other class. I can assure you that 40 years ago, Butts were not required to have white side walls.

If this makes for a better Corps, lets not be afraid to give it a try. There are those around who still think Ol Army went to hell when they put wood floors in the tents.

Seriously? I remember having to get a skunk stripe as a PH. I didn't like it but loved the compliments from the butts and zips on how redass it was.

I was FDT. If you could get a hold of your hair with your fingernails, it was too long!

I am fortunate that I never had to get a skunk stripe.

Not a fan of this. I had 5 finger whitewalls with a 4 on top Zip year. Hopefully the fish won't get in trouble if they "choose" to get better haircuts on their own.

I'm like WBBQ74, don't have a clue about what 4-finger or 5-finger or 4 on top is all about. I do know that our fish haircuts were SHORT! In fact, they were so short, I had to get two haircuts my first day since the first one wasn't short enough for the upperclassmen!
Basically, we were white sidewalls up to about where the "cowlick" was (so there was nothing but skin showing outside our biters). Regarding our hair on top, if you were to place your hand on the top of your head, open your fingers, then close them - if any hair showed between your fingers, it was too long. Lots of my fish buds simply did the Yule Brynner thing...starting shaving at their neckline and continue upward.

Lee72 has it about right from what I remember. I recall my Fish haricut was, well, a buzzcut all over.

And as pissheads, we had to wear Fish haircuts in the Band until about Turkey day, I think it was.

We shaved our heads for FDT, but saw it at the game and it looks much better.

If you really think the buzz cut was the old army way of doing it, just take a look at the pictures from back in the 1800's and early 1900's. Take another look at your copy of "We've Never Been Licked!" (You do have on don't you?) The buzz cut probably came about sometime in the 40's or 50's.

My grandfather graduated in '30 and was a hair god all four years, as was everyone else. My father, '62, makes it sound like he got one real fish cut, and then had what we would have considered a PH cut after that for the rest of the year. New hair regulations don't concern me as much as the wearing of class B's in march-ins and to Kyle. Does that bother anyone as much as me? It looks like drill before chow. It would boost the Corps' image in my opinion.

For a few years, the Corps essentially defaulted to three uniforms. Bravos, Midnights, and BDUs. Summer A's were rarely used, winter A's couldn't be used because they stopped issuing the jackets, and winter B's looked kind of funny and were eventually axed.

I personally liked the Summer A's a lot, and I always thought it was the traditional Parent's Weekend uniform, but then sophomore year they decided it was too hot to be wearing long sleeves and so we went to B's. Thanks to that shortcut that one year, everyone started thinking that B's was the uniform that was always used for PW. And that's probably similar to how B's became the uniform for march-ins, etc.

But honestly, I'm ok with Bravos for most march-ins. Maybe Summer A's, but definitely not midnights or anything with a jacket.

God forbid the Corps dress up for Parent's Weekend. Even though they were a pain in the ass, I like the way the maroon ascots that we wore under JVA look in pictures.
