Holy Crap! I stopped at clothing sales to get the new dress blue pants. They were > $100! I guess I will be a suspenders man for a while longer.

Pony up the money. It is worth it!

We now look as good as, if not better, than the USMC (who always had a good uniform)

I've got my blues, just that I still have the suspender pants. It looks the same when put together (just add combat stripes/badge). Why in the world does a pair of blue polyester pants cost so much though?

wareagle, those are the actual old blues, not the new ASU in that photo. the old blues were never intended to be compared to the Greens. personally i think the greens look better than the new ASU, and i cant believe i just said that. we should have just kept the greens and added a khaki shirt with the rank on the sleeves and the tie tucked in like back in the day. add the black stripe on the trousers to the corporal and above and be done with it. oh, and a belt for the green jacket.

its funny, but if you look at all the Army uniforms of days past, there are some really kick ass looking uniforms that we could have copied instead of settling on the terrible ASU. i wonder why the powers that be went to the trouble of putting the four prototype uniforms out 5 years ago for us to vote on, only to choose a uniform that wasnt even in the running when the new uniform discussion came about.

actually, in that picture he is absolutly correct in his uniform, that is the commander of 'The Old Guard" and he has plenty of practice with his uniform, when wearing full size medals in "The Old Guard" uniform, class 2 and class 3 awards are worn above the medals,

sek, you are right, and i edited my post after refering to the 670-1 again. i was confuuuuused, i tell you.

with the exception of the collar on their jacket, i think our dress blues look just as good as thiers. of course we royally screwed up the blues by adopting the ASU. now, they totally smoke us with thier versions of the Class A and Bs.

All the Army did, in essence, by adopting the ASU, was totally do away with a dress uniform below the Mess Dress. Now, when I wear my Blues to a dining-in, I am wearing the exact same uniform that Joe wears to go to the Soldier of the Month board. Way to take dress uniforms out of the equation, Casey!

Congress should pass a law that bars Army general officers from making decisions on uniforms. For whatever reason, they have absolutely no clue. The Army Class A/B uniforms have progressively got worse since WWII.

yep, and due to the gentlemans agreement between incoming/outgoing CSAs, much like the beret fiasco, this ASU abortion wont be overturned for decades most likely.

I say good riddance to the greens. I spent 3 long years recruiting in LA. I hated wearing the Class A or B greens each day. If I had a dime everytime I was told, "I want to join the Marines because their uniforms are cool"... I would be a rich man. The potential recruits could care less about the better programs the Army had over the USMC. Looking "cool" was more important to them.

I have lost faith in the Army choosing the best uniforms after the ACU debacle.

Some of us already used multicam...

BTW, are they making any other changes to the uniform than just changing the ACU pattern?

If I recall correctly, under this ASU concept, the Class B uniform will be the blue pants and white shirt. Good Lord. If you think the old green Class B was bad (and I do) just wait until you're all running around in that outfit. I cannot fathom how anyone could possibly think that having Army personnel wearing blue pants and a white shirt is anything but a horrible idea. And yet it was approved.

i love the army's blues and when we were in "The Old Guard" they are 100% wool and are sweeeet!, we got to buy then when we left and what a difference the wool makes,

it will be weird seeing blues as an everyday uniform, not looking forward to it

I wore my"tans" until the very last day the Army would let me get a way with it. I absolutely hated the green "B" bus driver uniform.

Actually, the Army had great uniforms in WWII (although a bewildering variety). A&M kept the best ones.

New white shirts look pretty lame. And how do you tell what branch an office is? Is this still 'broke'?

Fly Army 97

I prefer the new ACU and uniform that keep the branch stuff off the uniform. Come to think of it, I don't wear any of my pin-in badges on my ACUs on a daily basis.

I've never really found a branch insignia or badges necessary on a uniform. Now, on the blues/greens, yea..but other than that no.

Fly - Arer you Infantry?

As an 11A00, I want to know who I am dealing with. Branch brass is a must. I want it on our ACUs (or whatever new uniform they are coming out with).

aggie infantry, are you active? the Bs have never had branch insignia, and the ACUs, which have been around for over 5 years now, have never had them. only the As and the old blues and now the ASU in "A" configuration will have branch insignia. for over 5 years now we as an Army have gotten by without knowing officers branch. has our performance suffered because of it? im an NCO, and we have never had branch insignia on our work (BDU, ACU) uniforms and its never been an issue in over 200 years for us.

I agree with AggieInfantry, I would want to know who I am talking to. Back in old/ancient days, all variations of officer uniforms had branch insignia on them. I think a simple solution would be to incorporate branch color into the shoulder tab ranks, similar to shoulder straps on Blues. Every branch has a color/pattern combo already. They have already changed them from the original 'green' configuration to the current 'black' one. Another change would not be that much of a big deal but adding the color would solve the problem. In my later years on the few times I had to wear the current B uniform I left badges/ribbons off; felt them not necessary for that type of uniform. Never was comfortable with the lack of a branch identification, though.

I was lucky to retire before the ACU so I didn't have to deal with that situation. Officers need branch insignia on uniforms. NCO's have a different pecking order and MOS is not as important in that world as the actual rank. No disrespect intended at all to NCO's; they are the backbone of the military but this is an officer specific deal. If I wandered into a Division Main and was in the G3 shop I want to know what flavor I am dealing with. I just find it weird to see current Army officers wandering around without branch ID.

New guys don't miss what they never had. Kinda like good/dominant Aggie football teams who rarely lose at Kyle Field.

Not infantry...hence, Fly Army. I wore BDUs from the day I showed up to FOW in 93 until 2006. Can't say I ever cared for the starching, cloth rank, or cloth badges. Always thought the Marines did it right in that respect.

I can always tell who the infantry guys are though.

1. They (mostly) have Ranger tabs and really short hair.
2. They typically wear their hooah badges. CIBs are very common these days, and EIBs ID the (most of) rest.
But the trifecta = + #3 a dip is in the mouth with no visible spitter or he is talking about himself (not to be confused with aviators who do the same).

But I see your point on ID'ing the maneuver dudes at DIV. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure who I am talking to when I am in a room with supported units.

Knowing the branch of your audience is absolutely unnecessary. Why do you want to know? If you're in the G3 shop, chances are it's a maneuver guy. If it's not, then it's someone the boss thinks is capable of filling a slot and answering your questions.

The only (honest) reason I've ever heard for wanting branch insignia back is that certain branches want to be seen. As in what they look like is more important than what they do. As in certain guys get the benefit of the doubt based on what they are instead of what they do. If you work hard and are not an idiot, then it doesn't matter what your branch is.

Well, all that aside, that class B uniform is absolutely hideous. I guess the powers that be decided it was time to transform from the bus driver look to the computer technician look. Hopefully pocket protectors will be authorized - that would be a nice touch.
