Yeah, sorry to break the bad news to you. Just because you open a Mexican food restaurant in San Antonio doesn't automatically make it better then other places. But I have no problem finding some building on every street that fills a corn tortilla with cheese and HEB enchillada sauce and tells everyone they have enchilladas.

There are a ton of good restaurants here but I think Austin has us beat with the BEST mexican food restaurants. And after coming back from a week in Santa Fe I'd put them over us too.

So basically you don't like Jalisco style Mexican food and prefer Arandas or Monterrey

A valid point. SA Mexican food is a different animal than it is anywhere else. Personally I prefer SA Jalisco to Arandas and I LOATHE New Mexican (anything). Just different strokes

Edit for iPhone spelling

My little bro lives in Granbury; when he comes to SA, he has to make a pilgrimage to Blanco Cafe.

First reaction is to say how truly wrong this is on soooooo many levels, but as I was once reminded, seek first to understand.

Ate sushi at Koi Kawa last night on Broadway for the first time. I will never go back to Godai again. Excellent.

For sushi, I highly recommend Niki's Toyko Inn at the corner of Hildebrand and Blanco. It's a hole, but the sushi is superb (way way way better than Sushi Zushi).

Breakfast: magnolia's
Pizza: Paul's Pizza Roma is not well known but I think it's excellent. In the med center
Burgers: I like bigz a lot but San Antonio burger (I know real creative) at Fred and wurzbach is really good and they deliver.
Italian: really like Aldinos
Mexican: Paloma Blanca is pretty dang good but you have a million choices.
Sushi: Godai and then probably sushiana. Goro from Godai is super friendly and very talented.
Seafood: really a tough one for me because my family sells seafood but some top choices include Sandbar/il sogno, costa Pacifica, Monterrey, ounce, El bucanero, and my personal favorite, the grill at Leon springs.(spurs hangout)
Chinese: Mencius gourmet
BBQ; prob b&b smokehouse but I wish San Antonio had more BBQ choices.

Mexican: Panchito's on McCullough

Steak: Boudro's on the Riverwalk. Most places down there suck, but Boudro's is legit.

Burger: I like Luther's. People will probably disagree with me though.

Breakfast Tacos: Tony's Taco House on Nogalitos. BEST carne guisada

Ate there for lunch yesterday. Good food. Dinner seemed a bit expensive but lunch specials are fairly priced with good sized-portions.

Wouldn't qualify as my favorite but the food has always been good enough when i went there.

I have been there a few times and the food is pretty good but way over-priced. To me it is one of those places that gets lost in the shuffle because there are plenty of other viable alternatives (and in my opinion better) at much better prices.

it is still open. you may be thinking of little hipps which is now armadillo's.

Let's see here:

Small taqueria: El Rafa's on Hildebrand
Tex-Mex to take out of towners who want "San Antonio Mexican Food" so I don't have to go to the freaking Riverwalk: La Hacidenda de los Barrios
Steak: Ounce
Sushi: Godai (and that's no contest in my book)
BBQ: Two Bros. BBQ
Italian: Tre Trattoria...and Maggianos even if the two are on opposite ends of the spectrum for what is considered Italian
Bar type: Flying Saucer (only 42 more beers until eternal glory for me)
Thai: Thai Restaurant

The crab bisque was awesome, and usually sold out before we got there.

I loved the po-boys and gumbo myself. Admittedly, it's been a while since I've been able to go there so I don't know if the place has changed with their relative success.

Got the email from the Big Easy Cafe this morning. Today's menu was astonishing. I will be stopping by there for lunch later this week.

Not quite Indian food but a co-worker recommended a Pakistani place called Kohinoor. Was told the food was excellent but don't expect good service. If you go be prepared to wait and not be attended to but once you taste the food it is supposed to be worth it. The biryani was highly recommended.
