I live on the coast..not beach front but still the coast. My vinyl siding has probably served out its useful life. Hardi-Plank seems to be the default suggestion to replace it with.

Any other suggestions I should be looking at?

Hardie best and most affordable option. Can go lap siding, B&B, or panel siding. Or mix it up it certain spots.

Vertical preprimed HardiePanel w/HardieBattons seems to be more storm resistant than the HardieSiding boards, esp. if not installed by pros.
Owners choose Hardie warranty, installers choose LP.

I just finished my siding with the LP Smartside. I did the 'cedar shake' style with the staggered tooth. Not sure if you were going to be doing it yourself? This style comes in 12"x48" panels and is extremely easy to install by one person. I was very satisfied with the installation and the finished product.

I had Hardi plank on my previous house and did not like it; chipped easily and huge gaps (maybe poor installation on this) between boards.

Two things on LP, LP doesn't want you to miter outside corners like you would real cedar shakes. You have to do 1"x3"or 4" vertical corners and butt the panels up to it. Second, when you calculate the square footage needed, standard cedar shakes usually have 7" exposed, LP has a bit over 10" exposed. My supplier calculated my LP needs at the 7" (he was not too familiar with it) and initially delivered 30% more than I needed.

My house and garage are all Hardie Plank. I DIYed two walls of Hardie before I hired the rest out because it cracks if you even look at it funny during installation. I started working with LP Smartside on my cabin, and I really like it. It works much better for a DIY job because it's stronger and more durable during the installation and you don't need special blades and a respirator to cut it.

ETA: Check with your insurance company before making the final decision. I understand there are some companies that require cementitious siding like Hardie in areas prone to windstorms, and if not, the choice may still affect premiums because LP is a wood product.

Insulated Vinyl or LP. If you already have vinyl siding then replacing it with new vinyl would be easier especially if you're doing soffit/fascia as well.

LP does have a 50 year warranty but it is prorated. Hardie has a 30 year that is not prorated.
