PSA - mitre saw

I just had a mitre saw blade guard snag on its retraction track, and then when actually started moving, it twisted and the blade hit it and COMPLETELY SHATTERED the plastic blade guard.

It's amazing I didn't get seriously hurt. Took some small pieces of shrapnel, but amazingly nothing serious. Definitely a good thing I was wearing safety glasses, bc there were small pieces that hit the glasses.

My brother had a coworker who lost a finger in a similar situation, and I was actually thinking about it moments before it happened to my saw.

Definitely counting my blessings.

PSA - check the action on your power tools. Clean all sawdust regularly. And, if (like me) you're debating throwing out the old tool and replacing it, just replace it.

A ER visit is waaaaay more expensive than a new mitre saw.

What is the model and manufacturer of the saw?

An old delta, 10". Not sure of the model

Got it from a friend who got it from his dad.

Thanks for sharing and glad it didn't turn into an injury. Do you have pictures you can share?

Personally, I can relate and have gotten more safety conscious as I've gotten older. Just upgraded the table saw because I was nervous about not having a riving knife for the kids.

Next time, buy you an American miter saw instead of a British mitre saw, and you should be good to go (kidding - ).

Also - what are you considering as a replacement? I bought the Bosch glide action back when they were sort of exclusive with that mechanism. It's a great saw and I'd recommend it, but I think there are others that use a similar mechanism now.

I added a laser and bought plans for a 3D printed shroud for my dust collection and both were great upgrades. I think most miter saws like that have terrible dust collection because they try to make a shroud that allows for all cuts. The one I bought can do a range, but not all complex cuts, so it's easy to remove for certain angles. Dramatic improvement.

I don't have an easy way to post a pic, and no stars for the direct post…

I can't say I've done enough research yet, but definitely plan on a sliding compound of some sort. I have the space for it, and increased cross cut capacity would be very welcome.

The challenge here is, I have a non insulated pole barn for a work shop here in NTX. Direct moisture isn't a concern, but humidity and general atmosphere is.

I'm not inclined to spend any REAL money on tools until much more is put into fixing up the shop, but I also want to keep myself reasonably safe and not limp along on old damaged tools.

All that said, I'm probably gonna shop in the $250 range on this because it tends to be a work horse
