My pool pump starting acting weird two days ago. It has a great suction power in bringing water in and filling it, and then it will have a huge air bubble and drop in level. Then it will repeat itself over and over.

I had taken the lid out for a cleaning and greased the o-ring. It started up after that. Water level is fine and skimmer baskets are clean.

Any other ideas? I've taken off the lid and reset it a hundred times and can't it to keep consistent pressure.

Get a water hose and run water over the lid. See if you can hear it sucking air. May need a new o ring. I just replaced mine this week as my pump was doing the same thing.

It definitely sounds like a suction side leak so also run water over any valves you have before the pump. If it's a valve and you run water over it the pump will prime until you stop running water over it.

Replace o-ring on the lid or inside the pump itself?

I replaced the inside one a couple of months ago.

Replace the o ring on the lid. If you recently replaced it then check to make sure the clear plastic lid is not cracked and sucking air from the top. Once you've ruled out the pump lid, start checking those valves.

After you try this and it persists, start by turning off all valves and open them individually until you find the line that causes the issue.

Make sure you aren't running skimmers dry (water level too low) or your weird flap isn't getting stuck closed. That's usually the culprit. If you have a suction vacuum cleaner system make sure your leaf trap lid is secured and your hose isn't leaking.
