I just opened my attic ladder and this happened, and now it won't shut. Is this a safe/easy DIY repair? Seems possibly deceptively sketchy.

Father in law shattered his elbow when an attic ladder gave out. I wouldn't trust it.

Those rely on being perfectly inline. They aren't strong otherwise. As such, I'd try to straighten it back out so it closed and then replace it when I could. I don't know why attic ladders are always so rickety but I don't think I've ever crawled up any ever that weren't a bit iffy.

Do you have any recommendations for someone who could replace it? (I'm in College Station)

I sure don't. I'm a big fan of DIY when I can, but the Aggieland board has a lot of traffic and I'd bet they have recs. Sorry, wish I had someone.

As much as I hate Nextdoor, there can be some pretty good handymen available and this would be a solid candidate for them.

or grab a couple of lag bolts and some shims and get on it. I replaced the one in my house and the one in my garage with the aluminum 300lb ladder. Never done it before, but was pretty easy actually.

I have used these folks but I'm not sure if they will come to B/CS. https://safeliftsoftexas.com

It's not rickety at all and has solid seal. Not cheap at about $1,000 per door installed but I did not have to lift a finger.
