Thoughts on UV lighting for a whole home HVAC unit. Having a bunch of ac work down and they are of course pitching this sale but I am seeing mixed reviews online.

I would rather have an upgraded filter setup. Even if it is capable of killing pathogens (I am dubious), dead pathogens along with things that were never alive can also make allergies flare up.

UV lighting was used in public barber shops long time.

If you're getting The Works, then of course.
Agree with filtration system preference if it's an either-or choice and I lean toward the electronic versions one can visit at Honeywell. Las Vegas casino catch-alls, even cig-smoke and DIY hose cleaning if not dishwasher.

UV certainly would be popular during another virus scare and for those with young kids that bring health issue home year-round; might help those with allergies that filtration doesn't get?

What's your tonnage and the UV upcharge?

5 ton unit and they want $2k for the UV lights.

We live in Southwest Louisiana and have had a lot of issues with mold around can lights and various spots on the ceiling throughout the house, mostly due to improper ventilation and just all around bad AC unit setup. We are doing all new duct work and of course they say they found mold in the unit, still waiting on pictures. Can't seem to find anything on the internet if it's worth it or not. Gut says they are trying to squeeze me since they know we have had mold issues, but if it's worth it and I'm doing all of this work, may go all the way.

Make sure you do your homework. I believe the uv lights don't stay in the kill frequency for very long before needing to be replaced. And they are not cheap to replace. I remember reading it was like every 3-4 months.

Mine last a year, they can be installed yourself if you are handy and the bulbs are 100 bucks or so if I recall the last one I bought. They work, really well. It is my opinion that there is no amount of filtration that will preclude the need for UV. Moisture and organic material will find its way in, regardless of filtration, and it will grow nasties.

$150 - $200 to DIY. $2k is ridiculous.

For that price, I would give it a shot. For $2k, I'm out...
