I thought there was a similar thread a while back but couldn't find it.

We are finishing our country home within a few weeks and finally won't have vehicles/people/material all around the house. A brother in law has his skid-steer there and we're getting close to finishing up the grading.

I know this is not the time to sod grass and I'm not going to risk a waste of $$$, so what can I do in the meantime to hold the soil and keep (the dogs from tracking mud on our porches all winter long)? Ryegrass seed? If I use a winter grass couldn't I just Round-Up it in the spring? We're located in the Victoria, Tx area. Thanks.

Curious if this needs to be watered somewhat regularly in the winter time?

Somewhat regularly, but not near as much as the summer. Just needs to be kept moist while the roots establish - which they will even though the top isn't growing.

And yes, winter is a great time to sod as long as you can limit the traffic on it for a while.

Spend the money on Tif Tuf Bermuda when it's time.

We used 419 tif. That the same thing? Been great!

I'm not sure about that. Tif Tuf is the same stuff they use in Aggie Park.

Not the same thing.
TifTuf is:
*more drought tolerant
*more wear resistant
*greens up faster
*more dense & upright
than Tif419.

It's the only Bermuda we plant now unless we are required to do so.

Got it. Now that I think about it, I had asked for 419 and the guy told me to get tiff tuff.

Good call. Otherwise, you'll be digging up chunks of concrete 6 years later when you notice areas that just won't stay green in the summer.

Oh geez. I'm SURE I've got all kinds of crap under mine. I'm so sick of our builder. Almost done.

Its also way easier to go ahead and smooth the dirt under the sod instead of trying to fill/sand and roll later to get out the bumps. Do as much prep as possible to ensure it's a smooth yard.

My BIL always had a large dead spot in the front of his yard. When he went to punch it one year he couldn't go further than a couple inches down, and consistently in a large spot. He eventually decided to dig and called me to help. I wish I had taken a picture, but we dug up a truck bed full of concrete then he said eff this and called the builder.

Not sure how much it actually matters, but rent the 55 gallon barrel attached to a handle and fill with water to push the moist grass down firmly. Supposedly helps the roots take off in the loose soil.

Had damn near the exact same thing happen. Tried for several years to get grass to grow in a certain spot, but never could get it to take off. Finally, I dug down a few inches and hit concrete. We were out of the "warranty period" with the builder, but they still came out and fixed it. Was surprised and pleased while watching their folks dig out the concrete in the middle of summer.
