I have a friend building a house, and he needs a subpanel. He has a couple of location options, but the best is in the laundry room. It is a large walk-in laundry room. I know you can't put panels in closets or bathrooms, but I see utility room as allowed. Does this mean laundry room is also allowed? Is the only other restriction the working space from 110.26?

Thanks in advance to the experts.

What is the difference between a Laundry Room and Utility Room?

Generally, I'd say Laundry Room is fine if you're meeting the working space requirements, but I'll suggest you/they also review 240.24. Closets are specifically called out due to "vicinity of easily ignitible material". So I'd be sure to install in a manner that it's not installed up against clothes hangers or shelves or something similar to a clothing closet. You could always have an inspector take a subjective view, but I bet you'd be fine.

Wherever you put it, make sure he thinks about the use of the room when he places it. I have sub panels in a couple of places that when placed were fine but now they are blocked by stuff that has to be moved. Unfortunately, the space in front of them is more valuable than the need to be able to get into the subpanel.

I always try to put sub-panels in the garage, unless it is a detached unit. If so, I put it in the laundry, behind the door so it is concealable if the laundry door is open.
