Sulfur Smell in Water

So my wife says this has been going on for some time but even I picked up on it today and it's very strong.

The water in only one of our bathroom sinks smells very strongly of sulfur. I haven't noticed it anywhere else in the house and neither has my wife. Both hot and cold water and it's definitely not from the drain because it goes away once the water is off and I can cup the water in my hands and smell it.

We're on city water. Any ideas what's going on? Something with the faucet itself?

I would recommend you at least take a glass of water outside to smell it before eliminating the drain. Moisture can carry smells more effectively than dry air if you're smelling water - ie a wet fart vs a dry fart.

I'd probably do that with a dedicated glass of hot and cold respectively just to further eliminate options.

Can't a bad anode in a water heater cause this?

Are you sure it's the tap and not the drain? If it was every tap I'd say probably water - but if it's only one it's more likely the drain. Pour some bleach down the drain to kill all the bacteria that's collected in the trap and see if the stink goes away

Our washing machine drain will reek every once in a while when the wind is just right and causes some eddy effects on the roof vent. Agree with above, if on city water, I don't see how it can be selective in a single faucet.

I'm having the same issue with my washing machine, im wondering if my roof vent is clogged but I've thus far been to lazy to go check lol

Check roof venting or some consan 20 in the drain.

Bathroom smells are really hard to find. I had one that I thought was coming from my vent fan or air duct having a dead rodent. Got in the attic and ruled that out. Next changed out the wax ring on the toilet and still smelled some. Finally I put a bead of caulk on the toilet/floor and that finally eliminated the smell.

Although I tend to side on the drain needing to be taken off & power washed inside, the only other thought to offer would be
to get the WH to provide at least 160F to that sink, which may be difficuilt if it is in a remote location. Warn all others they may be scalded during this test period & use a thermometer to insure 160 is coming out. If that's not working then boiling water over the cold faucet might be worth a try, however unpromising & messy that may be,

A long shot would be to disallow the water to directly enter the drain, in case the down flow is so powerful, the sewer gas is allowed to do an end run about the P-trap "water stop".

I would be suprised changing out the faucet would work but would like to learn the end to such a mystery.

Is this bathroom used often or is it rarely used?

Took a look at the ptrap and that thing was clean as a whistle and didn't notice any smell coming from the pipes. I do feel like the more I'm investigating it's the hot water so it may be the anode issue someone mentioned.

Yep our WH at the office is out and if I don't use the hot water enough to drain it, the water stinks so bad.

If its bugs in the water heater you can turn the temperature up to max and kill them. It works with our under sink heater.
