Painting over wallpaper?

So we have a Master bath that is HEAVILY wallpapered. I'm talking light switch covers...etc. Every inch of the place other than trim. It's really bad-looking wallpaper.

I have tried to remove wallpaper in another house and it was a nightmare and left the drywall looking really bad. I used one of those little scoring things and it was not an easy task.

I know you can paint wallpaper but in an area like a bathroom with lots of humidity I was wondering if anyone had experience or foresee an issue with doing this? I'm imagining painting it and the wallpaper starts peeling off in sheets or something. Maybe overthinking it? Thanks for an advice/thoughts.

I had two bathrooms textured and painted over wallpaper. Been four years and no peeling so far. Bathrooms are secondary and not the master though so they don't get a lot of use.

I have done this. It works just fine. Important part is to make sure to coat with the right primer (glue like) over the wall paper. I would do two coats of primer. Zinsser BIN Primer is oil based, which is what you want to prime with over wall paper. Then float it, texture it, and paint.

Hopefully this! And plug covers/sockets too.

Pull off any loose wallpaper. Then, goto Sherwin Williams and buy a paint that is designed to permanently adhere the wallpaper to the sheetrock. Then, you can texture and paint.

I had that done to my bathrooms.

I wish I would have know about that before I ripped the sheetrock off the walls in my entryway, it was easier than removing that damned wallpaper.

I'll echo what they said about using the right primer. Most of the time I see people just prime and paint over it, then end up with vertical lines at each of the seams where there's now a break in the paint.

Wall papered socket and switch covers? Have you ripped out the deep pile shag carpet already?

Our master bath WAS heavily wallpapered.

Previous owner did a prime / texture / paint to cover.

There are zero "performance" issues but in certain lighting you can see the wallpaper coming through. We have been there about 4 years and I assume they did it a few years before us.

We will likely now have to remove the textured paint + wallpaper when we remodel which stinks....

My Kitchen, breakfast room and laundry room were texture and painted over wall paper.

I didn't even realize it till we remodeled after 13 years here.

I say go for it but just use the right products as recommended above.

Haha...yeah first thing I did was replace the covers. The funny thing was I had to cut the cover off the wallpaper. I'm surprised they didn't wallpaper the tub.

Thanks for the suggestions. I may try and see how easily the wallpaper comes off first in a nonviewable spot

I'm thinking about doing the same way. I've already found paintable wallpaper I like on the wallpapers to go site. But it is said that no primer is needed. Maybe I need to address wallpapers to go customer service and double-check it.

You most certainly can paint over that wallpaper. Someone in this thread was correct. It just comes down to using correct primer. Also if you like the smooth look and do not want texture then I would recommend skim coating the seams then apply primer. If you would like I can come out and take a look at this bathroom for you. Don't recommend it in a bathroom. It didn't work out well for us.
