*TLDR* Need grass seed recommendation

Long story short, our back yard is sloped, lots of old bamboo roots and turf isn't great. Currently nothing but weeds growing green.

Just got quoted $10k to re-sod 4500 sq ft...rather find an alternative (like rye or something like it) that will grow like crazy and I can mow down and save the cash.

What part of the world are you in and how much sun does your yard get?

Seed may be difficult on a slope. I have planted a Highlander Bermuda seed the last few seasons as I expand my yard and its done well so far. Bought from Hancock Seed.

However if you are covering approx. 4500 sq feet on a slope, it may be best to lay out sod. That is roughly 10 pallets. Should be no more than $2500 or so. No sure what the rest of your quote involves sitting at $10k. Seems very high without knowing the details.

I'd personally wait until spring and get to work/DIY prep the area for new sod.

Perennial rye would get you something in the winter. But with the week of cold we just had I'd say you are too late on getting anything this year unless we just have a warm November.

Rye is fairly cheap so it wouldn't hurt to give it a shot. 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet if it's bare soil. You can always go heavy also on application rate.

All of this to say. It'll die in the heat and you'll be left with weeds

I'd just go sod in the spring and go with Bermuda. That $10k quote is a ripoff

On the high end - in Dallas - you should be able to get sod and install (good installation) for around $500/pallet. The pallet will either be 450 or 500 sq ft.

As mentioned above, you can put perennial rye seed now, but by June it will all be dead.

If you don't want to bite the bullet on $5K for sod and install, I would at least sod the top of the slope and maybe the sides for erosion purposes and seed the rye. Then June 1 you could seed the non-sodded areas with one of the improved seeded bermudas. DIY and maybe a pallet's worth of grass - ~$200 + seed.

Depending on where you live, I would be happy to come by and give you some suggestions.
