We bought older house with open field behind us. There's a tree we now know how significant poison ivy growing within it. The vine at the base is about 2 inches this.

How do I get rid of this?

Move.

Sorry, but you can't even kill it with fire without still getting it on you.

Seriously, paying a pro to deal with it might be the best way forward.

Good luck

I've always just used a machete to CLEANLY cut the base and then used an eye dropper to put herbicide on the poison ivy stump. The rest will rot eventually.

I had some that was 6" in diameter in my back lot. I cut that sucker with a sawzall, then sprayed the stump with Roundup Poison Ivy. Little new growth kept trying to come back for like 18 months, so you have to keep looking for new sprouts and spray them with the poison ivy roundup before they get big. They don't just grow right where the stump is, they pop up in about the 8' radius of the stump.

If you come in contact with it, even the sawdust from the sawzall, use dawn on a wash cloth in the shower to take the bad oil off. The wash cloth part is important.

On the big Ivy stumps, after cutting, drill a hole at the top and on sides that will hold the poison. Pour the poison in the drilled holes, so that the poison sits in the holes drilled. that way the vine absorbs enough poison, vs just a layer on the top cut part.

What poison do you recommend?

You sure it won't damage the tree?

This is what I use to spray the backyard fence every year. Seems to work but I can't kill it completely because neighbor behind me refuses to do anything about their backyard and I can only spray what is on the fence and what I can see between the pickets.

Rather than a sawzall I'd say use a small hand saw. Much easier to clean.

Mineral spirits on tools, dish soap and a wash cloth with vigorous scrubbing on the skin. Think getting axel grease off without GoJo.

I know there are cheaper alternatives but I have mesquite and huisache so k always have remedy ultra on hand. I mix some of it with a little diesel and paint or CAREFULLY pour it on the exposed ivy stump. It takes very little. Just cover the stump with it. It can run down it but not off of it. If you get that crap on the tree, it could injure it I'd imagine.

The most important thing is after you do any cutting of have the slightest contact is to go shower. Use a wash cloth to vigorously scrub any areas that had contact or you may have touched after touching the stump. If you wait too long, then you'll have a nice rash as a reminder.

Yes. Treat the poison ivy oil like you would after working on a car. Simply washing it with soap won't work. Use orange clean or, like above, take a wash cloth with dawn degreasing soap and scrub the area. You have to do this within two hours of contact.

I'd go to the sink first. With a wash cloth, dawn soap, and a wash cloth. Get a good first pass on potentially affected areas before risking cross contamination to sensitive areas in the shower

Does it matter if I wait a couple months when it's winter and dormant?

No. The oil will still be inside and on the vine.

What about the leaves that fall? Will they still cause issue?

Just run them over with the mower and don't roll around naked in that area for a couple months.

I've got some thorny vines that are completely kicking my butt alone an entire fence line. I've already cut down 2 entire truckloads of them and have soooo much more to go.

I would have to move. Plenty of good advice here and still be super careful when it's dormant. Especially if you don't know how reactive you are to it. I can almost get it from looking at a picture in a book so I've learned to ID it and stay away. I suggest you wear crappy clothes or at a minimum tyvek that you can throw away in the garage and then start the dawn and wash rag/hot water scrub.

They would for me. I got a case of it once when a guy was weed eating on a golf course on a very humid and muggy morning.
