Well, I should've gotten a quote beforehand, but I wanted pool equipment out of the way and out of sight, so I decided to get the gas line moved to the other side of the house.

It's a total of (according to initial quote) 108 feet.

They can come from our attic instead of trenching, for $4,000. They are asking $6,500 to trench and bring around back of house.

I might dig by hand and they said it would cost $3,800.

I was expecting $2,000-2,500 based on the pool builder's estimates. Should've done due diligence first. I hope this helps someone out.

And call 811 (811-dig) before you dig or it could be a lot more costly!

My last bill for a 150 ft gas run was $8,500 (i build pools). That was hand dug to not damage sprinklers or pool lines so $6,500 seems reasonable.

A ditch witch might have you spending the same amount of $$ after you repair all your sprinkler lines. I'd recommend just going from the attic for an extra $200 to be done with it. Skip the back breaking labor of digging a 20" deep trench 108 ft.

Plumber said something about requiring it be bonded. Any idea what that means and how much an electrician will charge for that?

I had a whole hone generator installed which needed a new 100' line to be dug/installed. Cost of 2 new regulators, the tie-in, yellow pipe, and trench (as well as removing 4 old stumps and then trenching the 30 feet from the generator site to the house), was $2600.

Didn't realize how great of a deal I got until this post.

Sounds like he should ask for quotes for a trench and gas line to install a generator instead of pool equipment

In the process of having gas and electric routed around my house ~160 ft for a pool build and I think your numbers are pretty high.

2.5 years ago, Centerpoint got me for $350 to put the gas meter on the other side of the house. Plumber got me for $2250 to run all the pipes. It wasn't a really long run. AC man got me for $250 to come out and tell me my thermostat wire is shorted somewhere, presumably from plumbers putting new nat gas pipe into the attic and tripping on the wire. Home Depot got me for $50 for a spool of tStat wire and I managed to put the new tStat wire in myself.

What are they referring to as being bonded? The gas line? Or other pool equipment?

Gas line if in attic

You get some inspectors that interpret differently, and some municipalities have extra requirements, but typically the easiest way to meet the code is to bond at the equipment that is served. For example, if you're feeding a gas-fired furnace, you'd use the ground for the control power circuit (assuming this furnace is in the attic).

If that's your requirement, it's very easy work, and an electrician wouldn't need to pull any wire. They'd just pop a small conductor from the heater to the pipe and be done. Not even an hour's time and practically no materials.

If your municipality requires a conductor from the panel back to the gas meter, it could get much more complicated. I'd just call a couple of local electricians and spot check what they think based on local codes.

ETA - bonding in this case means that if the pipe becomes energized due to a faulty cable, there is a return path for the current back to the breaker box to cause the breaker to trip. The pipe is "bonded" to the system electrical ground.

Remember that 811 will only get you from the service provider to the meter. Anything else you have underground won't get located.

Yeah, I find it odd that they wouldn't mark everything to your meter.

Texas 811 even has this faq.

What are private utilities?
Private utilities are lines not owned by utility companies. They are usually between the meter and the building. If you have a curbside meter your property may not get marked by utility companies. Other underground utilities that generally are not marked in include, but may not be limited to: sewer lines, private lighting, sprinklers, fire mains, secondary electric lines to detached garages, pools, and septic lines.

My understanding was the utility owned everything up to the meter. Never heard of it stopping at the transformer.

Agree with that in Houston.

They marked from the green transformer to my meter.

I can see if your meter is on the side of a garage, then trenches to the house panel 811 not marking after the meter, but from transformer to meter is 100% public. And should be marked.

I looked into this for a generator. Approx 220ft was going to cost $3500

The project ended up on hold as I will likely add an outdoor kitchen at some point and will need gas in the area. I plan to just have a second meter added to the property.

I asked about coming from the attic but was told the 1" service line isn't large enough to power the generator and the kitchen.

Had my yard all marked up a few years ago for new pool construction (in Dallas, served by Oncor for electric, Atmos for gas, Spectrum cable, and AT&T phone). Electric, cable, and phone were marked all the way up to meter and demarc boxes on the side of my garage. Gas was marked up to the meter in the alley and stopped there.

I used our trencher from work and had my guys doing something else at the house I was paying them for when they helped me out with it and then paid my plumber $350 to plumb the 140 ft of water line and 100 ft of gas line. Add in material and brought it yo about $450.

This is essentially the same work… I don't want to go "cheap" and regret something but I'm not sure how this is possible.

These are for trenching and installing 108/110ft of 1.25" pipe around the back of my house.

That's almost $200/ft. Yikes! Run away!

Speaking for our local market, a lot of guys don't like to do small jobs with all the new housing work they have going on. Sure seems like they don't want the work.

I called a "cash" type company recommended to me and it was $4,000

These two quotes posted are from Blue Star Plumbing and Legacy Plumbing. I'm a fan of Legacy and think they do a good job.

18k is nuts.

I just had ~100 ft of gas line put in for outdoor firepit and tee off to a griddle and power burner in an outdoor kitchen.

I paid a landscaper ~800 to trench and ~2k for the plumber. I handled the permit app and fee (~50).

I sent Texas 811 an email, the transcript:

Hi, this is Emily calling from Texas eight one one. I am actually calling to in regards to a request through our website. There was a question asked if eight one one would mark the electrical lines coming from a transformer to your power meter if they are underground. I wanted to let you know that, yes, eight one one does mark only underground utilities. Typically they do from a meter to the main line. Anything beyond that on private property or that deviates from the main line and meter, that is through a private locator. But yes, they should be able to mark your underground utilities. If you happen to have any other additional questions, please feel free to give us a call back at eight one one. Or you can try 800-344-8377.

Just one final remark. I just had the previously named gas/electricity utility come out and remark all the utilities on my property today. I was out there with the guy as he marked and talked to him.

The guys marking the lines are contractors hired by the utility and are under explicit instruction to not mark anything between the transformer and the electric meter on any homes. The utility is declaring that is customer owned and not their liability now.

Anyone telling you anything different is wrong and under false pretenses. I will be escalating this with gas utility. Be safe out there and hire a guy to do private marking of your utility.

"Ha! look at this idiot. He wants us to..**checks notes**..be safe, share how utilities are now quietly abdicating a duty everyone on here wrongly thought they perform, and keep everyone from being electrocuted!"

Why do I even keep coming back? Y'all are all wrong, and I take the time to show you you're wrong for your own safety and then its 'what a loser.'

Go trench your electric line corp ag for all I care.

If they are before your meter, yes, after no.
