Electrician wants $684 to replace two 20 amp AFCI breakers. That seems absurd.

And then $500 or $850 (el cheapo vs nice unit) to install a whole home surge protector. That seems less bad but I'm clueless.

In Aledo if that matters.

Are you the least bit handy? Replacing breakers is as easy as using a screwdriver.

Depending on the surge protector that too may be as easy as screwing into your breaker panel in an open slot.

I'd expect a few hundred at most if it was a larger electric outfit but I don't know what their overhead is lie and they very well might just be expensive.

The question is, how comfortable are you with working on an electrical panel? It's a piece of cake if you've done it before but there is an extra wire on an AFCI OR GFCI breaker so you'll have to hook that up. If you aren't familiar with any of this, I recommend you kill the main power first and invest in a non contact tester.

It's not rocket science but people die doing every day because most have just enough knowledge to be dangerous.

I am one of the least handy people alive. Aptitude tested off the charts low for manual dexterity in high school.

But it doesn't seem that hard if the power is off?

I'd get a couple of other quotes. It seems high. That said, that breaker is going to have a neutral pigtail and if you are replacing them then put them back like you found them. Get the breaker for your panel. Don't get GE for a Sqaure D or Siemens for a GE….you get the idea. Yes. Kill the power at the main first. And triple check with a working tester IN THE PANEL. Hots, neutral bar, ground bar, check everything for current before putting your paws inside.

If you have any doubts, it's worth having someone do it….there is zero shame in understanding your personal limits.

When I had the electrician wire out buildings, I snagged the journeymen working for them and had them wire my office on the side for cash. I triple checked the work and had one minor neutral isssue but my point is that there are electricians that want to work outside of business hours. A nextdoor post might be worthwhile.

If I was on your side of town I would install all of this for a case of Miller Lite. Do you have any friends that are the least bit handy? Brother in law or son in law?
