Can you overseed Zoysia over a St Augustine lawn?

Not with any success you can't.

In my experience, zoysia seed is not really a thing. I've seen it for sale on the internet, but it's never been clear to me what variety it is, etc. Presumably different than planting zoysia sod.

I've spread Zoysia seed and it never sprouts.

I planted Zenith Zoysia seed in my backyard back in June. It took about a month and a half of 4x a day watering to sprout but it looks great now. Very nice to walk on barefoot.

It was bare soil that I put a lot of work into preparing. Might not have as much success over seeding it.

My yard is 90% full sun. I'm going with Bermuda. **** all these weak ass grasses.

Zoysia is supposed to be pretty hardy

Zoysia is best done via sod. I did emerald this past March and it's been crushing it, despite the heat, on a 2x a week schedule.

I had some sections die that are next to fences/under trees/on roots but any issues are confined to the areas I expected to struggle.

Slower to fill in and repair than Bermuda but still a great choice. They all have their issues, but bermuda and zoysia are miles ahead of st Augustine.

I'm with this. Bermuda is the best for a no bs yard. I cut mine at 1-2" and never worry.

Zoysia can be badass with a lot of maintenance

Zoysia is great. So much better than St. Aug.

I'm a big believer in Zoysia! That said, you really aren't going to be able to get Zoysia without sodding. Zenith is the only seed and I think it would be a long and tough process to get it to fight through existing St. Augustine. Zoysia is a slow spreading grass.

This year I finally got tired enough of the spotty TIF 419 bermuda in my backyard that was rapidly regressing in some areas. Have some areas of my backyard that get 3 to 4 hours of sun due to some tree coverage, and the Bermuda was disappearing in those sections. The bermuda loved it in the sunny spots and looked great, but I wanted a grass that handled shade better and I wanted a uniform yard with only one grass type. HATE St. Augustine so that wasn't considered haha.

I sodded with Zeon Zoysia back in mid-June. Despite the ridiculous summer of high heat and no rain (lots of 110+ days in DFW area), it's thriving so far. I've kept it at a little higher of a cut than I will in future years, but I like the feel and look of it so far at this height. Obviously just using a rotary mower. Don't plan on ever cutting it razor short with a reel mower....my wife doesn't want a golf course fairway feel.

This was taken 2 days ago after I mowed.

Who did you use for your sod?

Fort Worth Grass and Stone in NW FW.

Owner isn't very personable but their sod is almost always excellent quality. Zoysia needs to be special ordered and they truck it same day/next day from Bladerunner farms in Poteet.

Only about 8 pieces or so off the 4 pallets I ordered were too dry and didn't take. Everything else looked great from Day 1.

I hate you for having that grass...its beautiful.

I have yellow, dead weeds.

And yellow, dead St Augustine.

And green monkey grass that came over from my neighbors yard, because nothing kills that stuff.

And dry cracked dirt.
